Schools watch Tyrone sewer talks with some interest

Sewerage negotiation between the town of Tyrone and south Fulton County will have input from the Fayette County Board of Education as well.

School Superintendent Dr. John DeCotis asked for “authorization to sit at the table” from the board Monday night. “We've been invited to participate with them,” he said, referring to Tyrone officials who are seeking to hook onto sewer lines in neighboring Fairburn and run the lines down Ga. Highway 74.

Tyrone Elementary School is on a septic system, and the Jenkins Road school complex — which includes Sandy Creek High School, Flat Rock Middle School and Burch Elementary School — is served by a school-owned sewer plant and spray field system, which costs the district $120,000 to monitor annually.

School facilities director Mike Satterfield said the plant is 11 years old, noting that there is “a certain amount of liability with operating a (sewer) plant.” If the school system could hook onto the proposed sewer system, Satterfield predicted long-term savings.

While Tyrone has been talking about sewer hookups for about three years, DeCotis told the board that Tyrone councilmen indicated the issue was “moving forward,” with action possible within a year.
