Four election races remain for November

Two Fayette County elections were finalized during last week's General Primary runoff, with five remaining to be decided in the General Election Nov. 7.

State Sen. Rick Price of Fayetteville lost his bid for reelection to District 28, which includes parts of Fayette, Coweta and Spalding counties. Coweta resident Mitch Seabaugh took the Republican nomination in last week's runoff and will take the Senate seat in January, since no Democrat is challenging for the post.

Terri Smith defeated her opponent for the Republican nomination for Board of Education Post 2, Kim Gatlin, and also faces no Democratic Party opposition. Smith will join the school board in January.

In the Post 3 school board race, Marion Key emerged victorious over incumbent Connie Hale, but will face Democrat William J. Bryant III in November.

A.G. VanLandingham defeated Carl Davis in a race for County Commission Post 1, and also will face opposition in November, from Democrat Elizabeth Jane Barnes.

U.S. Rep. Mac Collins, R-3rd District, also faces opposition in November after defeating his Republican opponent, Herb Galloway, in the July 18 primary. Democrat Gail Notti of McDonough also won her party's nomination July 18, defeating Peachtree City's J.P. Agrawal. Collins' district includes Fayette County.

In the two remaining November races, neither the Democratic candidate nor the Republican faced opposition during the General Primary July 18.

Fayette County Superior Court Clerk W.A. “Bud” Ballard, a Democrat, faces a challenge from Republican Sheila Roxanne Studdard.

Another Democratic incumbent, state Sen. Greg Hecht of Jonesboro, faces Republican Bryan Hilton of Lithia Springs for the 34th District seat. The district encompasses parts of Fayette, Clayton and Douglas counties.

Only 5,321 registered voters took part in last week's runoff, representing an 11.2-percent turnout.
