Planners turn down more office space

Tyrone Planning Commission voted 3-0 Thursday to deny a rezoning request that would have added office space to a two-acre tract on Dogwood Trail. Commissioners decision was bolstered by several neighbors that believed rezoning the property from residential to office would essentially move the Market Hill development in their back yards.

Proposed bill would create two new cities

True to his word, state Sen. Kasim Reed has introduced two bills in the Georgia General Assembly that may well change the future of South Fulton County.

Kasim Reed continued his whirlwind tour of locales around South Fulton County earlier this week, conducting town hall meetings designed to inform residents on the move to consider incorporating South Fulton into the cities of South Fulton and Chattahoochee Hills and to answer questions on the measure.

Council says yes to new land

Fairburn council members Feb. 13 voted to annex and zone property on both sides of I-85. A 101.6-acre tract along I-85 between Bohannon Road and City Lake was cited for possible use as an office park with accompanying retail while a 1.2-acre tract at Ga. Highway 74 and Oakley Industrial Boulevard is currently being developed for retail.

Fairburn makes change in trash service

Fairburn council members decided Feb. 13 to split the city’s sanitation service between two providers.

CLM Sanitation will provide residential service while Advanced Waste Disposal will serve commercial customers. Cost-saving measures to customers was cited as the reason for the decisions.

Shamrock Park to get makeover

Now that the town's new library has a site, the Town of Tyrone is getting serious about cleaning up Shamrock Park.

Town Manager Barry Amos briefed the Town Council Thursday night on possible revisions to the town's master plan. Originally, the library, along with a new municipal complex was slated to be built in Shamrock Park. But Amos said residents objected to the idea and said they wanted the park to remain a park. Amos then suggested the town hire Jerry Petersen to re-work the city's plan for the area and detail what could take place in the park.

Emotions ran high Thursday night as a community leader clashed with Tyrone officials over his plan for a teen youth center.

New location for Legacy Theatre

The Legacy Theatre is moving locations before the ground was even broken on the previous location. Instead of being located on Senoia Road toward Peachtree City, the theatre will now be located on the end of Carriage Oaks Lane, close to Chaps on Ga. Highway 74. Both owner Bethany Smith and the town of Tyrone are very pleased with the new location.

Sandy Creek athletic facilities getting an upgrade

By next fall, Sandy Creek High School will be able to hold track meets on campus.

As parts of its special projects list, the Fayette County Board of Education approved $300,000 Monday night to build an eight-lane rubberized track at the high school on Jenkins Road. Directory of Facility Services Mike Satterfield told the board the school currently has a six-lane asphalt track that’s fine for practice, but don’t meet standards for staging track meets at the school.

Palmetto council opposes anti-annexation bills

Palmetto council members Feb. 6 voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution joining Georgia Municipal Association’s opposition to two House bills related to municipal annexation. Resolution 06-01 opposes any legislation that restricts the rights of property owners seeking to annex into a city.

CHC group adds to board

Chattahoochee Hill Country Conservancy has expanded its board to keep pace with the area’s growth. The conservancy announced Jan. 20 the addition of four new board members.

Elder faces another stalking charge

Eighteen-year-old Fairburn resident Larry Marco Elder was arrested at Fairburn City Court Feb. 8 for stalking a woman in the Meadow Glen area during a two-week period in December and January.

Palmetto burglary suspect arrested in Atlanta

An Atlanta man arrested Feb. 4 on multiple charges after soliciting sex from an undercover Atlanta officer is a suspect two Jan. 31 business burglaries in Palmetto.

Medicare Matters registration

South Fulton Senior Services, Inc., in conjunction with the “My Medicare Matters” mobile unit, will host a Medicare Part D registration session for older Americans Thursday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Senior Center.

Tyrone sends sewer contract to Fairburn

The City of Fairburn has received a copy of Tyrone’s recently approved sewer contract and should take up the issue at a February meeting.
