Citizens want more recreation for kids

Community input ruled April 3 at the Palmetto City Council meeting. Residents voiced questions and concerns, supported by council members willing to take up their cause.

Union City looking at sewer options for condos

Union City Administrator Terrell Jacobs and City Attorney Dennis Davenport were given the go ahead to discuss the creation of special districts and the method to a fund plan to address infrastructure improvements in several city condominium complexes. If the measure were to come about the city would be repaid over time.

Fairburn businesses now have a voice in the community

The landscape in Fairburn is changing. And that changing landscape includes business. That reality and the need to share ideas and promote an increasingly healthy business climate has led to the formation of the Fairburn Business Association.

Farmer’s Market set to open

The City of Fairburn is pleased to announce the Fairburn Farmer’s Market will again be a weekly event in historic downtown Fairburn beginning Saturday May 6 and running through Saturday, Oct. 28 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The market will be held at the Freight Depot located at West Broad Street and U.S. Highway 29, one-half block from the intersection of Hwy. 29 and Hwy. 92.

Palmetto-free trash pick-up

The City of Palmetto will provide free trash pick-up of limbs, leaves and yard debris April 17-28. For one free pick-up per household please contact city hall at (770) 463-3377.

On April 23, 2006 the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will begin examining all aspects of the Fulton County Marshal’s Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. This process is taking place so that the Fulton County Marshal’s Department will receive its reaccreditation.

Palmetto Fire Department will flush and inspect all city fire hydrants beginning April 10 through April 21.

Planners OK office space on Jenkins Road

A motion to rezone an eight-acre tract on Jenkins Road passed March 30 at the Tyrone Planning commission on a 3-0 vote. The recommendation to designate the property from AR (Agricultural Residential) to OI (Office institutional) came after presentations at several commission meetings.

Soccer complex gets OK

Site plans for two recently proposed businesses along the Ga. Highway 74 corridor were approved March 27 by the Fairburn City Council. Council members approved plans for an indoor soccer complex on Oakley Industrial Boulevard and a small animal hospital on Hwy. 74 near the Fayette County line.

Armed robbery charge proves false

Sometimes there is just more to the story. Such was the case recently in Fairburn when investigations by city police related to reports of an armed robbery and a home invasion led to the arrest of the men reporting the crimes.

City wants a new park

Union City council members March 21 approved a measure allowing the city to apply for a $100,000 federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to purchase property for a city park.

Planners give approval to youth center

The Tyrone Planning Commission March 30 voted to recommend an amendment to the Table of Uses in the town’s zoning ordinance that would allow the establishment of a youth center within the M-2 zoning category. The center would be located in donated space in Shamrock Industrial Park.

Crash knocks out lights, 74 traffic

The aftermath of a wreck on Ga. Highway 74 in Tyrone left the highway blocked for about five hours Monday afternoon.

A car crashed into support poles for traffic lights at the intersection of Hwy. 74 and Dogwood Trail, sending the lights’ poles crashing down across the highway, said Tyrone Police Chief Johnny Hay. This is the second time this has happened in two months at Dogwood and Hwy. 74.

Union City passes bond referendum

The turnout may have been small in this off-year election but voters had their say. Union City voters March 21 overwhelmingly approved two bond referendum items totaling $12.5 million, designed to upgrade city streets and public safety infrastructure.

Jones gets life sentence for murder

Harry Andrea Jones had his day in court. When it was done, he found was guilty of felony murder and aggravated assault and sentenced to life plus 15 years.

More industry planned for Fairburn

Fairburn Planning & Zoning commissioners at the March meeting gave their approval to an annexation and zoning request that would turn a 55-acre residentially zoned site on Creekwood Road into one zoned M-1 (Light Industrial). The proposal includes trading 16 acres of city owned property for an equal number of acres owned by Simmons Vedder.

It has been 28 years since the Rico community had a library. It was located at the old Rico Elementary School. But that was then and this is now. Today the doors are open at Rico Public Library, located at the newly opened Rico Cultural Center at 6505 Rico Road.

An estimated $28,000 was raised for Fayette County’s free medical clinic at a benefit last weekend at Glendalough Manor in Tyrone.

Council wants to hear about Shamrock Park

For the next week, Tyrone residents will get to have their say about Shamrock Park.

Council members Gloria Furr and Grace Caldwell are going to door to door this weekend with a survey to elicit comments about the downtown park. The survey runs through March 31 and a copy of the survey can also be found on page A2. The survey will ask residents what the park should look like and what type of activities should occur.

It is a race born in the love for four year-old Riley Peek. It is a race determined to enhance awareness and participation and to raise needed research funds for the Mitochondrial disease that affects this precious little girl and so many other children. Now in its second year, the Race for Riley fundraising event will be held April 29 at Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Palmetto.

City getting tough on nuisance violators

Palmetto council members earlier this month heard the first reading of two amendments to city nuisance ordinances. The change removes the requirement to issue a 30-day warning for violations at single-family residences, providing instead for potential of the immediate issuance of a citation by city code enforcement if conditions warrant. The initial vote on the measure was 5-1.
