Fairburn makes change in trash serviceMon, 02/20/2006 - 9:53am

Fairburn council members decided Feb. 13 to split the city’s sanitation service between two providers. CLM Sanitation will provide residential service while Advanced Waste Disposal will serve commercial customers. Cost-saving measures to customers was cited as the reason for the decisions. With the city’s contract with Allied Waste set to expire soon, the city had requested bids for garbage pickup services, City Administrator Jim Williams said. Council members were provided with a comparison list of five providers that responded to the request. He said the city study group addressing sanitation proposals requested that bidders separate their proposals between residential and commercial after the group noticed that low and high bids fluctuated between the two types of service. They asked the companies to provide individual bids for residential and commercial service. Williams said four of the five bidders agreed to do so, with only Robertson declining. Williams said Robertson was the lowest bidder for commercial rates but not for residential. The current cost for residential trash pickup is $13.50. Commercial rates vary depending on the whether a 95-gallon cart is used or, for larger customers, the size of the dumpster. Bidders that separated their proposals included Allied, CLM, Dreamson and Advanced. Residential bids included trash pick-up, yard waste and recycling material. Bulk items and white goods were not included in the bids except by Advanced, who included those services in its bid. Allied submitted a bid of $25.93 compared to $10.77 for CLM, $17 for Dreamson and $16.99 for Advanced. The commercial bid by Allied totaled $296.24 compared to CLM’s $315.77 and $263.99 by Advanced. The bid by Dreamson included prices for various dumpster sizes but did not provide for pricing on the standard 95-gallon cart. After discussion, the council voted to award the three-year commercial contract to Advanced and the residential contract to CLM. “CLM was low from the get-go,” said Williams. “They take customer service seriously and they have new equipment. Also, their general manager lives in Fairburn.” login to post comments |
