Reece Center holds benefit sale

Reece Center for Handicapped Horsemanship will hold a benefit garage sale and tack sale Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the non-profit organization’s Palmetto site located at 8280 Wilkerson Mill Road. Proceeds from the sale will help cover the cost of feed and care of the organization’s horses.

Shamrock park on next week’s agenda

Tyrone residents will finally get a glimpse of the future of Shamrock Park.

Council member Grace Caldwell said this week the results of a survey of tyrone residents is completed, and the results will be unveiled at Thursday’s Town Council meeting.

Massive development on Hwy.74 moving forward

The largest commercial development to hit southwest Fulton County in decades is inching closer to reality. Conceived as a major retail venue along Ga. Highway 74 and spanning 100 acres just south of I-85 between Oakley Industrial Boulevard and Milam Road, Fairburn City Administrator Jim Williams told council members Monday he expected the property to close by mid-August.

City has big annexation plans

If Union City has its way the size of the city will more than double by the end of October. If approved by landowners and registered voters, proposed annexation would encompass large areas primarily to the north, south, northeast and northwest of existing city limits.

Council gets grilled by residents

Union City council members got an earful from two determined residents of High Point Commons subdivision Tuesday, expressing concerns over what they called government inefficiency, shoddy development and increasing crime in their neighborhood. The council made no response to the concerns, though one council member said at meeting’s end that those concerns had no fallen on deaf ears.

Fairburn shooting victim in critical condition

A Riverdale man is in critical condition after being shot in the face and abdomen in a late night disturbance April 16 at a Fairburn residence. Neighborhood resident Santos Watkins was charged in the shooting.

Business group off to a good start

The new Fairburn Business Association Kick-off meeting April 17 carried a punch. More than 50 business owners made their way to the city annex building on Washington Street to begin to lay out plans designed to propel the Fairburn business community into the future.

School system considering Tyrone sewer proposal

The Fayette County Board of Education is moving forward in studying the town of Tyrone’s offer to hook up to the city’s sewer system.

Town wants to lower taxes

Tyrone Town Councilman Mike Smola wants to make sure residents won’t be paying higher property taxes this year.

During Thursday’s Town Council Meeting, Smola said he had analyzed his own property tax bill over the last several years and discovered that Tyrone’s rate kept on growing. The county and school portion of the tax bill had grown just over 1 percent a year, but Tyrone’s bite had averaged a 4.3 percent increase each year.

It is a new way of reporting crime, tracking its category and location and keeping city council members and the public informed. A component of Fairburn Police Chief Charles Long’s Accountability Policing model, the new, weekly statistical analysis was presented to council members April 10.

Anyone who has traveled the rolling hills of unincorporated South Fulton County in the past year has noticed the growing presence of residential communities in various stages of development. One of the more recent planned editions to the area is Hampton Oaks, being developed by KB Home in conjunction with television personality and entrepreneur Martha Stewart.

Fairburn joins improvement district

Fairburn council members April 10 voted unanimously to respond to a request to join the South Fulton Community Improvement District (CID). The request related to city owned tax parcels adjacent to existing CID boundaries. The 300-acre parcel, the former site of a proposed wastewater treatment plant and now designated as a city nature preserve, is situated in the unincorporated area southwest of city limits.

Students of Lila Teal at Tyrone Elementary were the first children in the state to receive this year’s installment of the 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia educational booklet. They received this honor because Teal was an integral part of the booklet’s creation, writing content for the 18 page, full-color publication.

Tour de Georgia returns to the area next week

People are expected to line the streets along the route of the second stage of the 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia next Wednesday, as 120 cyclists from over 22 countries will ride from the start in Fayetteville, through parts of Coweta and South Fulton County, on their way to the finish line in Rome. This is the second consecutive year for the event to pass through Fayette, Coweta and South Fulton Counties and race organizers expect the crowds to be even larger this year.

County not set on new library system

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners hasn’t made up its mind about starting its own countywide library system, a group of government officials was told Tuesday night.

Fairburn’s Fire Dept. is up and running

It was a gala event by any estimation. The April 1 celebration in Fairburn marked the first day of operation of the new Fairburn Fire Department. A real sense of celebration was in the air, with a station full of guests, food and fun included. No one that day could have been happier than new Fire Chief Jody Weller and long time firefighter, fire safety supervisor and firefighter advocate Walt Brown.
