Union City has multiple events planned in observance with Georgia Cities Week April 23-30. Special Projects Coordinator Stephanie Gaines has engineered a seeries of community events designed to have a positive impact on the city and its residents.

The “If I Were Mayor of Union City, I Would...” event is planned for April 26. This unique activity, said Gaines, is meant to enhance communtiy development by encouraging youth involvement in civic activities. Students will write a 150-word essay to be judged by the mayor and city council on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought and grammar. First Place and Honorable Mention winners will receive a Plaque of Merit and have their essays read over the school’s intercom, their essays published in local newspapers. Winners will have the opportunity to read their essays in a Recognition Ceremony at the May 16 council meeting.

On Saturday, April 29, the city will celebrate Keep Georgia Clean Month. Special Projects Coordinator Stephanie Gaines said Spring is already here and our closets aren’t the only thing that needs to be cleaned out! This year, Union City is determined to keep our community a beautiful place to live and to work. Therefore, we are planning a Spring Clean Up to show Union City residents and visitors why we are “A Progressive City!”

The City of Union City, along with PromoPax, Inc., Allied Waste, Kroger, and Coca Cola, are sponsoring a Community Spring Clean Up. This event will be open to all Home Owners Assocation members, residents, and civic groups on Saturday, April 29, 2006. The Community Spring Clean Up will last from 8:00am to 12:00pm. After 12:00pm, volunteers will convene at Mayors Park to enjoy a Fish Fry sponsored by Rick Blackwell of Let’s Go Fishing and Union City’s Police Chief, Mike Isome. The Fish Fry will last from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and feature local entertainment.

Call Stephanie Gaines, Special Projects Coordinator at 770-964-2288, to join the clean up event on Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 8:00am – 12:00pm. All registered groups and volunteers will receive complimentary Trash Bags for litter cleanups. Other event “tools” may be available at no charge as well. Immediately following the Spring Clean Up, a free Fish Fry will be held in Union City’s Mayors Park for all volunteers who participated.
