Town wants to lower taxes

Tyrone Town Councilman Mike Smola wants to make sure residents won’t be paying higher property taxes this year.

During Thursday’s Town Council Meeting, Smola said he had analyzed his own property tax bill over the last several years and discovered that Tyrone’s rate kept on growing. The county and school portion of the tax bill had grown just over 1 percent a year, but Tyrone’s bite had averaged a 4.3 percent increase each year.

“What with all the uncertainty around Delta and Ford, I think we need to so something to help our residents,” Smola said.

Councilman Grace Caldwell agreed and wondered if the town wouldn’t also be able to get more revenues from impact fees.

“Unfortunately, those can’t be used for operational costs, just capital programs,” Smola said.

Caldwell also suggested the town review business license records to make sure it was getting the correct amount of revenue and look at other sources of revenue.

The Town Council instructed the staff to come up with a budget that would take into account rolling back the millage rate to account for higher assessments.

“What with all the uncertainty around Delta and Ford, I think we need to so something to help our residents,” Smola said. Don't make me laugh! That was word for word what a taxpayer said to HIM at town hall, and his response was something to the effect that the increase was only 40ish more a household and he wasn't prepaired to give that up! How do I know? I was the taxpayer that said it!

Grace Caldwell who use to me a county commissioner, was also trying to give him the ABCs of the proper way to figure the taxes. He would have none of it...and was just as aggrogant as always. Smola are you trying to change your image for the next election? Don't bother. We now have 2 Council Members who care about the welfare of the town and taxpayers and we don't need you!
