Tour de Cure arrives May 21

The Atlanta/North Georgia office of the American Diabetes Association is challenging local cyclists to dig deep within themselves and un-tap the determination, strength and courage it takes to participate in the 2006 Tour de Cure®, an annual cycling event to raise money for diabetes, the nation’s fifth leading cause of death by disease.

Fairburn eyes annexing 1,200 acres to within quarter-mile of Tyrone

The Fairburn City Council held its first discussion on potential annexation plans into unincorporated South Fulton County May 8. Perhaps minor compared to the expansion plans of other South Fulton cities, Fairburn was the first city to map out its tentative plans in a public meeting.

Bear Creek Reservoir gets 1st OK

The South Fulton Municipal/Regional Water and Sewer Authority is moving forward with plans to construct Bear Creek Reservoir, a project that would supply future drinking water to Union City, Palmetto and Fairburn. A May 9 presentation of the Regulatory Task Schedule related to mitigation plans involving property purchased from a single land owner or from multiple land owners was the only issue addressed in open session.

Palmetto man charged with murder

A Palmetto man is facing murder charges in the May 2 shooting of 26 year-old Coweta County resident Bradley Alan Mitchum. The early morning shooting occurred along Ridley Road in Coweta County near Palmetto. Mitchum was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where surgery was performed for a gunshot wound to the head. Mitchum died Wednesday.

City wants to redevelop Shannon Mall area

Union City is looking to redevelop targeted areas of the city with a focus on commercial areas such as Shannon Mall. Setting the stage for that redevelopment was an April 18 vote to put a measure on the November ballot authorizing the city to create a Tax Allocation District.

The next meeting of the newly formed Fairburn Business Association takes place on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fairburn Annex, located at 40 Washington Street. Capt. J.T. Rogers from the Fairburn Police Department will be the featured speaker. His presentation, Problem Solving Policing, will bring the group up to date on programs and activities designed to increase public safety throughout Fairburn.

Fulton County Board of Education District 4 member Linda Bryant will hold a community meeting at Liberty Point Elementary School in Union City May 8 at 6 p.m.

Middle schools score well on state writing assessment

Fulton County continues its trend of high scores on state testing with 93 percent of eighth grade students scoring “On Target” or at the “Exceeds Target” level on the Middle Grades Writing Assessment. For the seventh consecutive year Fulton County has scored above the state and metro Atlanta average.

Shamrock Park survey draws ire of council

When it comes to the beautification of Shamrock Park in Tyrone, nothing comes easy.

On Thursday night, Tyrone Councilmen Gloria Furr and Grace Caldwell released results of the recently completed resident survey on the future of the park. Judy Jefferson, who helped compile the results, said that more than 800 surveys were filled out and that 60 percent of what residents wanted at the park is already there.

Tyrone still waiting to hear from Fairburn on sewer agreement

Fairburn City Administrator Jim Williams said last week the city had not had the time to reconcile the differences between the sewer proposal Fairburn originally sent and the one Tyrone submitted in response. Williams said a long period of time had elapsed between the time Fairburn sent the proposal to Tyrone and the time the Tyrone’s proposal made its way back to Fairburn. Williams added that he expects to communication back with Tyrone in the not too distant future.

Palmetto outlines annexation plans

Palmetto has become the first South Fulton County city to publicly discuss facets of its annexation plans. Those plans were discussed at the April 27 council work session. Plans call for more than doubling the size of the city, a transition, said Mayor Clark Boddie, that can be accomplished without raising taxes or borrowing money while immediately providing fire, police and trash pick up services to those annexed.

A wealth of questions about the June 2007 vote to accept the charter and form the city of Chattahoochee Hills were addressed April 25 at a public meeting at the Rico Cultural Center. A group of more than 200 residents heard presentations and posed questions to moderator Rodney Peek, Georgia State University’s Dr. Robert Eger, lobbyist Lewis Massey, Chattahoochee Hill Country Alliance Chairman Mark Hennessy, Commissioner Bill Edwards. South Fulton Concerned Citizens board member Chuck Miller and others involved since the idea of incorporation surfaced last year. Though the group is currently centering its efforts on the annexation attempt by the city of Palmetto to more than double its size, most questions and comments were geared toward issues of possible city-hood.

City wants more sewer capacity

Union City officials are concerned that current and upcoming residential development will result in a need for greater wastewater treatment capacity. Responding to that concern, the City Council April 18 approved a measure aimed at increasing sewer capacity at the county’s Camp Creek Wastewater Treatment plant.

Robber is still on the loose

An armed robbery Wednesday night at Subway in Palmetto left employees physically unharmed and a lone gunman on the lam with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Animal control costs jump

Everything goes up in price, including the cost of animal control. The Fairburn City Council April 24 voted to approve the recent Fulton County estimate that increases the annual animal control service to $52,904, or 10.7 percent, beginning in July. Council members also agreed to re-examine the issue if the new estimate exceeds 10.7 percent.
