By next fall, Sandy Creek High School will be able to hold track meets on campus.

As parts of its special projects list, the Fayette County Board of Education approved $300,000 Monday night to build an eight-lane rubberized track at the high school on Jenkins Road. Directory of Facility Services Mike Satterfield told the board the school currently has a six-lane asphalt track that’s fine for practice, but don’t meet standards for staging track meets at the school.

The board also approved $140,000 to replace bleachers at sandy Creek’s gym, along with $120,000 to replace stadium lights and poles at Fayette County High School. The $560,000 to fund the items comes from next year’s special projects budget of $633,000.

“So that leaves us just $73,000 for all the other schools?” asked board member Janet Smola.

Satterfield said that was correct and it was necessary to go ahead and bid the projects now, so they would be ready when school starts in the fall.

He also added the bleachers at Sandy Creek’s gym posed a problem, because there no rails to aid fans in climbing up the steps.
