Thieves hit Antioch Baptist overnight

A local church’s faith has been tested — and strengthened — after it was looted early Friday morning.

Thieves broke into Antioch Baptist Church on Woolsey-Brooks Road early Friday night and got away with so much stuff that they likely used a moving truck and perhaps a trailer, according to the Rev. Jerry Garner, the church’s pastor.

Heroes campaign raising money for disaster victims

The South Metro Advisory Board of the Atlanta Red Cross has kicked off its annual Heroes fund-raising campaign.

Dozens of volunteers in the community have pledged to raise $1,000 each for the Red Cross. All proceeds will aid local residents in the southern crescent counties who suffer the loss of their homes due to fire, flood, tornado or other disaster.

SMHS makes the list

Starr’s Mill High has been listed by Newsweek magazine as being one of the top 1,000 high schools in the nation.

Periodically the magazine ranks the nation’s high schools by taking the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests all students take in a given school divided by the school’s number of graduating seniors.

Parents who would like to receive their child’s CRCT scores over the summer can request a copy by mail.

A self addressed, stamped envelope with the child’s full name (first, middle and last) and grade level written on the front must be turned into the child’s school no later than May 26.

Police to put HEAT on bad drivers

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia are conducting a crackdown on dangerous, aggressive and high-speed drivers.

The campaign is called “100 Days of Summer HEAT.” The acronym stands for “Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic.”

Hospital hosts blood drive

Piedmont Fayette Hospital will host a blood drive for the American Red Cross Thursday, June 8 from noon to 5 p.m. on the third floor of the hospital’s 1279 building, located west of the main hospital campus.

PTC Rotary offers candidate ‘meet and greet’ session

Town manager Barry Amos told the City Council Thursday night that he had recent discussions with the Fayette County School System about Tyrone Elementary School.

The summer of annexation really begins in the spring. Study plans and annexation efforts by cities in South Fulton County geared to a legislatively-imposed Oct. 30 deadline for annexation are largely under way. At stake are more than 11,000 acres adjacent to Palmetto, Fairburn and Union City and identified for possible annexation by those cities by October.

Citizen wants more recreation opportunities

In a recurring series of appearances over the past few months, another High Point Road resident expressed her concerns May 16 to the Union City Council. Sylvia Floyd said she was concerned about Union City’s lack of community activities, especially the absence of recreational activities for youth. That concern were paired with others, including area crime and fast moving vehicles along High Point Road.
