The anticipation of securing additional sewer capacity from Fulton County resulted in a May 16 vote by Union City Council not the extend the sewer moratorium on residential annexation, residential rezoning requests and preliminary plat approvals in existence since 2003.

City engineer Charles Corbin said Union City was currently negotiating with Fulton County for another one million gallons of sewer capacity. The county will consider the request for additional capacity within the next 90 days, he said. If approved, the additional capacity, combined with current capacity, will provide the city with 2.5 million gallons per day of sewer capacity.

Mayor Ralph Moore suggested the council not extend the moratorium. The council responded with a unanimous vote. The city’s Planning Commission had previously recommended the move, also with a unanimous vote.

The initial May 2003 moratorium involved residential annexation and rezoning requests and preliminary plat approvals so that city officials could study sewer capacity, update the Comprehensive Plan and prepare an annexation plan recommended by the Planning Commission. The moratorium had been extended each year since that time. The council April 18 adopted a measure requesting an additional one million gallons of capacity from the newly expanded Camp Creek Wastewater Treatment facility.
