Shamrock Park plan gets OK

At long last, the Tyrone Town Council has come to an accord on Shamrock Park.

After months of bickering, the Town council voted unanimously Thursday to accept the Shamrock Park redevelopment plan, along with the Main Street concept into the town’s upcoming comprehensive plan update.

“I just want to thank the council for this vote. If we don’t get our act together, we can’t move forward,” said Mayor Sheryl Lee.

Two weeks ago, the plan for redeveloping Shamrock Park was presented to the council, but was not approved because Councilman Mike Smola and the mayor wanted to look at the written results of the survey that was recently conducted about the park.

But Thursday night, the Town Council was all on the same page and agreed it was time to move forward with the process. Councilman Grace Caldwell announced that she had just received a donation of $300 from United Community Bank for help in restoring the park, and said the community was excited about refurbishing the park.

With the town’s baseball association no longer using the fields at the park, the town is getting ready to eliminate the fields and get ready for removing the concession stands.

“I’ve got a commitment from somebody who said they could have those buildings taken down in a day,” Caldwell said.

Today, town leaders and citizens are staging a clean-up of the park and are hoping it’s only the beginning of restoring the park to a downtown jewel.

As a centrally located park of substantial size, Shamrock Park is one of the best things about Tyrone. Although it has been poorly maintained, it certainly has the potential to be a "jewel" of the town. Triangle Park, on the other hand, is bordered on all three sides by streets, one of which is Tyrone's main thoroughfare. While it can provide attractive green space, its small size and close proximity to traffic severely limit its usefulness as any sort of a safe recreational park. Although the town council seems to have given priority to the development of this speck of land, I'm glad to see they are finally looking toward refurbishing Shamrock Park, which is already used daily by citizens, is much larger and therefore can accommodate more citizens, and is in a much safer location.
