The Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Maestro Robert J. Ambrose, will be performing at Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, on May 31, at 8:30 PM. This elite ensemble, as part of DCINY’s “Excellence in Education” Series, will feature works by Bourgeois, Bryant, Colgrass, Gould, Grantham, Newman, and Shostakovich.

The existing traffic light at Hwy 54 and MacDuff Parkway stays red on the MacDuff side for long stretches. This is nothing new, but at times during the morning and evening the traffic trying to get out of Wilksmoor backs up past the apartments, past Cedar Croft and beyond the first stop sign. I guess it’s more important not to inconvenience the traffic moving to and from Coweta than to inconvenience the town’s resident taxpayers, but that's another matter. A more recent development is that cars coming in and out of the new shopping center across from MacDuff are adding to the problems at this intersection. Many of those cars are going straight from the shopping center down MacDuff, meaning that cars coming out from MacDuff and turning left have to yield. This makes this long light even longer. Fewer cars can get through the light when it turns green and it’s ripe for accidents. I was almost hit tonight. The car coming from the shopping center was turning left toward Coweta and I turned left toward PTC at the same time. The car behind the shopping center car, however was going straight and was not going to yield, even though I was almost already through the turn. There are no left turn signals. There is no other way out of Wilksmoor, the shopping center isn’t even open yet except for a few places, and I can see the traffic piling up when the activity at the shopping center increases causing long backlogs of people trying to get out of Wilksmoor.

Several weeks ago, the Citizen posted an article titled, "Kenwood Park, it's TOO Popular" which exposed a serious problem that I and many others have been well aware of for quite some time now. The problem, out of county residents (primarily from Clayton and Fulton) are overtaking, and in some cases abusing, Kenwood Park in north Fayetteville (a Fayette County park). Kenwood Park is the newest park and probably considered the "crown jewel" considering it's newness, wide range of recreational facilities, and overall $6.something million dollar cost to county taxpayers. Moreover, these out of county license plates that make up over 75% of the overall cars that are parked in the park, make Fayette Countians that want to use the park along with their families feel uncomfortable by allowing their "family pets" (i.e., pit bulls) to roam free. Even the ones that are chained to a fence as you walk by scare the be-jesus out of kids and adults.

A sinister bill working its way through the House may eventually serve as a companion piece to the Department of Homeland Security’s “Rightwing Extremist” report that labels veterans and advocates of the Second Amendment as dangerous terrorists — H.R. 2159, The Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009, sponsored by Rep. Peter King of New York.

Tyrone’s Council is unconcerned about a GBI investigation that revealed former mayor Sheryl Lee authorized payments of employee benefits in violation of the law in 2007. The report shows Tyrone’s Council adopted a Payment Plan in 1997 that only allowed leave to be accrued by employees up to 30 days on a “Use It” or “Lose It” basis. Upon resignation or termination employees may be paid for up to 30 days or 240 hours annual leave. Comp Time is supposed to be paid every two weeks, up to a maximum of 80 hours or 10 days, per year.

In a 10-page memo outlining an almost seven-year history of classified briefings, intelligence officials said that Pelosi and then-Rep. Porter Goss (R-Fla.) were the first two members of Congress ever briefed on the interrogation tactics. Then the ranking member and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, respectively, Pelosi and Goss were briefed Sept. 4, 2002, one week before the first anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
