The leading cause of death among children ages 2-6 in the United States is accidents. In light of that fact, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City is launching an effort to address those preventable tragedies here in Peachtree City beginning this summer.

Fairly soon the Peachtree City Council will get its first crack at the proposed 2007-2008 city budget.

Two workshops have been scheduled so the Council can ask detailed questions about the first draft of the budget proposed by the City Manager. That draft hasn’t been completed yet but could be available as early as Friday, June 1, according to Assistant Finance Director Janet Camburn.

Senoia City Council did a slow burn Monday night at news of having its library site be dismissed by state officials.
The Council reacted with surprise as Library Board attorney Mark Mitchell said a state official from the library system had visited the site in the city’s park and said there were two main problems: being too close to power lines and the railroad tracks.

Coweta County Summer School for high school students will register students on June 4 through June 6 at the Central Educational Center in Newnan.

Registration starts Friday June 1 for entries in the 2007 July 4th parade in Peachtree City.

The "Take 25" campaign for National Missing Children's Day includes a web site, www.Take25.org, that features 25 ways to improve child safety. Topics range from safety at school to safety on the Internet.

Fayette County budget talks continued Thursday, with Fayette Senior Services asking county commissioners for an increase that would nearly double the current funding level.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will scale back its construction projects across the state – suspending related lane closures on all interstate and major state system highways – through Monday to ease Memorial Weekend traffic congestion. Beginning at 5 a.m., Friday, May 25, and continuing until 10 p.m., Monday, May 28, there essentially will be no scheduled lane closures on any Georgia interstate highway or primary state route.

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Ranking Republican Member on the Senate Agriculture Committee, and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) recently announced that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns has approved Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue’s request for a Secretarial disaster designation for all eligible Georgia counties affected by severe freezing conditions that occurred April 6-9, 2007. Fayette and Coweta counties were among the 152 counties in Georgia identified as primary disaster areas.

During the week of July 23, 2007 the Fayetteville Police Department will have some new young recruits; the Department will be hosting its fourth annual Junior Police Academy. The Department will be taking applications June 1–30. Applications can be picked up at the Fayetteville Police Department located at 760 Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard. Applicants must be entering in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade and have a “C” average or better in school. Class is limited to 20 students.

It was a “no go” for the request to rezone Hudson Plaza Shopping Center on N. Glynn Street from C-2 to C-3.

Fayetteville Planning & Zoning Commission Tuesday denied the request saying it did not conform to the city’s Future Land Use Plan. The denial centered on the Midas Muffler Shop, which is permitted under C-2 zoning but would require a special exception under C-3. The request will be heard by the city council in June.
