PTC Rotary offers fun safety course for kids

The leading cause of death among children ages 2-6 in the United States is accidents. In light of that fact, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City is launching an effort to address those preventable tragedies here in Peachtree City beginning this summer.

Rotary Safety Town will be a program that will target children about to enter the first grade and would provide personal safety training in a fun “summer camp” atmosphere. Classes will include bike and pedestrian safety, stranger danger, fire prevention, poison safety, school bus safety and even computer internet safety.

The program will be sponsored and financially supported by the Peachtree City Rotary Club but will be administered by the YMCA, in cooperation with the Peachtree City Police Department, Peachtree City Fire Department, the Peachtree City Recreation Department, and the Fayette County Board of Education.

Each class will be a one week session (five days) that would be from 2-1/2 to 3 hours long. Plans are to have both morning and afternoon sessions, over an eight-week period during the summer. Classes will be limited to no more than 25 students. In the first year, the Rotary would target the seven elementary schools in Peachtree City and if successful they hope to expand the program county wide the following year.

Classes will be offered at the following schools and dates:

Kedron Elementary June 25-29

Kedron Elementary July 9-13

Braelinn Elementary July 16-20

Braelinn Elementary July 23-27

Participants must register in advance. Registration forms have been sent home with school children. They are also available on the web for download at www.rotarysafetytown.com.
