Students selected to Governor’s Honors

Fayette always has a strong showing at the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program and this year is no exception.

A total of 25 students from Fayette’s five high schools will participate in the six-week study program this summer in Valdosta. The program provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

Whitewater assistant principal arrested for golf cart DUI

An assistant principal at Whitewater High School was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with DUI while driving a golf cart, police said.

The Peachtree City City Council will appoint a committee to recommend Scottish-themed names for Peachtree City’s West Village at the July 19 City Council meeting. The five-member committee will be chaired by former Peachtree City Mayor Fred Brown.

Police: Car seen speeding just before crash Friday

Police say speed may have played a role in a Friday afternoon wreck on Peachtree Parkway that seriously injured a Sharpsburg woman.

A witness told police that he saw the 2001 Toyota Corolla going “extremely fast” moments before the car crashed into a patch of trees in the median just south of Windgate Road, said Police Chief James Murray.

Fairburns asks for concessions from CSX

CSX Railroad may get what it wants from Fairburn, but only if it makes good on issues that have plagued the city, and municipal neighbor Palmetto, for many years. Fairburn planning commissioners Tuesday tied their recommendation on the railroad’s expansion plans to a dozen conditions, including repairing and maintaining the three degraded and dangerous overpasses and consideration of establishing a “quiet zone” for the customary train whistles that blow throughout the downtown area in the dead of night.

Palmetto City Council heard a host of citizen’s concerns during the public comments portion of the June 4 meeting. Those concerns outlasted the remainder of the agenda and centered on trash pick-up and the continually expressed need for city-sponsored recreation and increased police officers.

Commercial rezoning hits a snag

A proposal to develop a two-acre site in the Sycamore Grove commercial area on Tyrone-Palmetto Road ran into a zoning snag at the May 31 meeting of Tyrone Planning Commission. This time, the snag belongs to the town. And in the end the proposal was tabled until a legal decision can be obtained.

Commission turns down Wieland variance

It was only 25 feet, but that was too much for Tyrone Planning Commission. A variance request May 31 to reduce setbacks on corner lots in the new John Wieland Rivercrest subdivision on Ga. Highway 74 failed by a 3-1 vote.

East Coweta's star pitcher Rico Reid was drafted by the hometown Atlanta Braves with the 768th pick. Reid is a right handed pitcher and an ace on the Indians staff this season.

Bank robbers hit Palmetto

Two men fled with an undisclosed amount of money Friday afternoon after an armed robbery at RBC Bank in Palmetto. Palmetto Police Chief Bobby Fronebarger said no one was injured during the robbery.

Drug agents seize 11 pounds in Friday bust

It was like a whirlwind zeroing in on the parking lot at O’Charley’s Restaurant on Ga. Highway 85 as Fayette County drug agents in the early evening hours Friday seized 11 pounds of suspected marijuana and arrested five men.

I-85 lane closures set for Monday

The DOT announced Friday that lane closures in both north and south bound lanes of Interstate 85 will continue from June 11 through June 14 at varying locations south of Hwy.34. These closures will shift daily within these locations.  This closure is due to the widening and lane reconstruction project currently underway.  Shoulders are closed in these construction areas, and extreme caution should be observed.

Task force nets drugs and $275K

Not bad for a night’s work. Fayette Sheriff’s Drug Task Force, FBI and DEA agents pulled a drug reverse June 6 at Fayette Pavilion, seizing approximately $275,000 in cash, approximately one pound of “ice” (methamphetamine) and arresting six Mexican nationals living in Norcross.

Tyrone's library could open in December

The dry weather has proven to be a boon for construction of Tyrone's new library. During Thursday's Town Council meeting, town manager Barry Amos announced the construction crew was ahead of schedule on building the facility. If everything goes as planned, construction could be completed by the first week of December.

Fayetteville- don't leave kids unattended in the car

It may seem like a crackdown but it actually provides more discretion in handling what is currently a one-way ticket to a criminal record. Fayetteville City Council Thursday adopted an ordinance prohibiting children under age from six being left unattended in vehicles.
