Giving
thanks...
By REV. JOHN HATCHER
Religion Columnist
Giving thanks
constitutes exercise. There's no way thanksgiving comes passively. It
takes effort. For a "thanksgiving" transaction to take place,
two agents are required: one to deliver the thanks and one to receive
the thanks.

Is
more federal control the answer?
By DAVE HAMRICK
Editor-at-large
As a conservative
and partly libertarian pundit, I spend a lot of time trying to convince
people that the federal government is too large and intrusive, and is
involved in matters it is not authorized by the Constitution to be involved
in.

Citizen's Perspective
Since it is Thanksgiving
week, and has been such a strange month politically, I thought I'd look
for the silver lining in our present state of confusion. Being the eternal
optimist, I know there must be some good in all of this craziness. Here
are a view observations.
Choice

It's safe to say
that Republican legislators, particularly those in the state House of

outraged, in fact, at the Democrats retaining control of the General
Assembly, and their anger was on full display during the party caucus
last week.

Letters to
the Editor
Sen.
Cleland, will you support military vote?
If what is coming
out of Florida is correct, the Democratic Party should be totally ashamed
of itself. Precluding ballots submitted by the military serving this
country overseas is the last straw. We have seen the Rev. Jesse Jackson
lead demonstrations in Florida to preclude disenfranchising blacks.
Who will represent the military, if not you?
Lack
of information makes absentee voting more difficult than necessary
On Monday, Oct.
30, eight days before the general election, my wife and I decided to
apply for absentee ballots. To speed up the process, I drove my wife
to [the Fayette County Elections] office to pick up the ballots. When
she asked for the ballots, she was given two printed sheets of white
paper and a sample ballot without any explanation.
Shame
on Gore, Democrats, Florida for disqualifying 1,400 military ballots
Enough already!
Like most Americans, I've watched with ambivalence the controversy surrounding
the election of the single most important political office in the world,
the presidency of the United States.
Democrats
will do anything to stay in power
It is amazing watching
how these disingenuous Democrats will do anything in order to hold onto
power. The votes in Florida have been counted by unbiased machines and
then recounted by the same machines. In both instances, Governor George
W. Bush has come out with the lead.
PTC
Council may have acted legally on big boxes, but still irresponsibly
[Editor's
note: The following letter was sent to Peachtree City Mayor Bob Lenox.]
Mr. Lenox, Thank
you for your response, albeit after the fact.
Why
would big boxes want to locate where they're unwanted?
Our developer-friendly
Peachtree City Council members (Dan Tennant is the only one not a developer
puppet) have voted to allow Home Depot and Wal-Mart to build, but one
question remains unanswered: why would those companies want to build
where they are not wanted?
About
big box letter: Sorry, Dan
A few issues ago
I wrote of my new arrival in Peachtree City and the profound shock I
had that the city council and mayor had voted through the new Home Depot,
Wal-Mart big box plan. I have a sincere apology to make to Dan Tennant
who I found has been the only member of the council to continually vote
no in allowing Wal-Mart to come to the city based on the interest of
health, safety and welfare of the people.
So
many battles against overdevelopment in PTC, so many losses
Ever since I started
the Concerned Citizen group on Dec. 7,1995, I had been involved with
Peachtree City shenanigans, and thanks to my subscription to The Citizen
newspaper, I am still in touch and have consistently watched the City
Council ignore the citizens' wishes and competent suggestions to save
the quality of life of a once quite wonderful city.
Apartments
in PTC: When do they stop?
Please excuse another
letter, but my continued disappointment and concern with the affairs
of the city require me to speak out. I am now writing about the Walt
Banks property on Ga. Highway 54 (opposite Publix).
Oppose
school near railroad
Last month I expressed
my bewilderment at how the City Council of Peachtree City could rezone
the Katz property near the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74 from
industrial to residential. I believe that Dan Tennant was the sole vote
in opposition to the rezoning and the conditions (Carol Fritz was not
present).
Male-dominated
Southern Baptists misinterpret Bible about women's roles
The Georgia Baptists
recently accepted rules adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention last
June, which included that women shall not be pastors. Thank God for
the Texas Baptist's cut of funding to the national denomination, and
for the example of Jimmy Carter in leaving the Baptist Church over this.
There are other churches and denominations supportive of women that
deserve our support.
We're
all losers in F'ville liquor referendum win
The day after the
election, the liquor referendum was listed on the front page under "winners."
I don't believe it is! I believe we are all losers those who voted for
and against this referendum. When the people of Fayetteville entered
the voting booths to vote in favor of this, they had the interests of
the entire county on their shoulders. A little over 200 voters determined
the destiny of the county with over 30,000 families.
