Andy Thompson is the new women's soccer coach at Wingate University.

A native of Fayetteville, Thompson was the interim head coach for the second half of the 2000 season.

The team won 11 matches last season, which tied a school record for wins. They also won three games in the South Atlantic Conference, which set a school record. The Bulldogs also scored 53 goals, 37 more goals than in the 1999 eason.

Thompson has a solid background in soccer. He graduated from Mars Hill College and was the school's first men's soccer All-American. He holds several records at the school, including most goals scored in a single season (26), most points scored in a single season (57), and career goals scored (73). In addition, he tied the school record for career points with 170.

A graduate of Fayette County high School, Thompson will begin his duties immediately and he is ready to get to work. He will attend tournaments in Raleigh and Greensboro this weekend, scouting talent. He also will attend a tournament in Miami over the holidays.

"I hope we can replace the players we lost and add some players in spots where we need them," Thomspon said. "If we can do that, we have a shot at winning the conference championship."

"Many teams play to their strengths," Thompson added. "We will play the game of soccer. We will have the personnel to do this. If everyone gives 100 percent, everything else will take care of itself."
