Newspaper, business association set forumThe Citizen Newspapers and the Tyrone Business Association (TBA) have joined forces to jointly sponsor the “Tyrone Candidate’s Forum.” The forum is open to the public and is October 15 at the Legacy Theater in Tyrone from 7 to 9 PM. County may change noise ordinanceThe Fayette County Commission may consider amending its noise ordinance to allow a resident’s request for his children to ride dirt bikes on a track they built on their property. Flu shots available Oct. 1Fulton County Dept. of Health and Wellness will begin offering flu shots Oct. 1 at its 12 health centers. Residents will be able to obtain the flu shot at a cost of $25. The department has ordered 14,000 doses of the vaccine and strongly encourages individuals who fall within a high-risk group to get the shot. Outdoor watering banned by stateFayette, Coweta and South Fulton residents have been ordered to drop almost all residential outdoor watering as the state continues to reel from drought conditions. Voters reject South Fulton’s city plansThe preferences of voters in unincorporated south Fulton were heard Sept. 18 as the call to form the city of South Fulton failed in a landslide vote with percentages that were virtually opposite those of Fulton County’s four other unincorporated areas that previously voted to become municipalities. Voters rejected the city of South Fulton measure 84.65 percent to 15.35 percent. Is Christian City liable for $1 million?It may be a simple misunderstanding, but Fulton County Dept. of Housing and Community Development (HCD) has issued a letter to Union City-based Christian City, Inc. informing the organization that its non-compliance over a $1 million “forgivable loan” from federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2005 is subject to repayment. The loan, initiated by then-HCD Director Camilla Moore, is one of several being scrutinized by Fulton County and HUD. Library planned for Chatt. HillsThe impressive community-sponsored library at Rico Cultural Center may get a facelift of gigantic proportions. Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library System Director John Szabo told Chattahoochee Hill Country residents Sept. 17 of tentative plans to construct a 25,000 square-foot library somewhere in the new city. The library is one of several being considered for south Fulton. Old Campbell County Homecoming Grand Marshall chosenThe Old Campbell County Historical Society has chosen on of its own to serve as this year’s grand marshall for the homecoming parade. On Oct. 6 at 10 a.m., Nell Eversole O’Shields will ride down the main street of her birth and upbringing in Fairburn. Tyrone mulls over Sunday liquor salesA request for Sunday alcohol sales in Tyrone may just end up on the ballot sometime in the future. The town council Sept. 20 considered a letter from a resident and from Sundried Tomato general manager Brad Hitt, both of whom requested that Sunday liquor sales considered. Hitt noted the struggle to compete with restaurants in neighboring cities and the need to maintain strict enforcement guidelines if approved. Lottery tickets missing from Shell stationOne or more individuals are being sought in connection with an early morning break-in at the Shell station on Senoia Road and Palmetto Tyrone Road Sept. 16. The burglary resulted in the theft of a lottery stand and an undisclosed number of tickets. Was cemetery defiled by developer?It is a pretty convoluted issue that may hard to prove, but there is little doubt that some of the old gravesites on the property at Trickum Creek Estates off Palmetto Road have been disturbed. Questions posed by the Tyrone Town Council Sept. 20 were aimed at finding a solution to the problem and rectifying the situation. To date, houses are complete or under construction on three of the five lots. Vote on new city is TuesdayThe day of reckoning is down to the wire. Voters in unincorporated south Fulton will go to the polls Sept. 18 to make a decision on forming the city of South Fulton. The referendum is the last of five such moves inside Fulton County. Previous votes by unincorporated residents resulted in the formation of the cities of Chattahoochee Hill Country, John’s Creek, Milton and Sandy Springs. Misdemeanor filed in salty burger caseThe normal patrol for Union City police officer Wendell Adams took an unexpected turn in the early morning hours Aug. 7 when he was sickened after eating a couple of bites of a Big N’ Tasty hamburger from the McDonald’s restaurant on Ga. Highway 138. The unusual incident resulted in a misdemeanor charge against 20 year-old McDonald’s employee Kendra Bull, who said she accidentally over-salted the burger. Exel under EEOC investigationA former employee at Exel’s Fairburn facility is being represented by U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in a sexual harassment law suit filed Sept. 7. West Nile case confirmedFulton County’s first case of West Nile virus (WNV) was confirmed in a 56 year-old Atlanta man who was treated and released from an area hospital. The infection marks the 12th in Georgia during 2007, with Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness urging residents to take precautions when outside and to clean areas of standing water. Two arrested for robberyFast work by employees and Fairburn Police Thursday landed two men in jail for aggravated assault and robbery. Donald Jones, 46, of Riverdale, and 55 year-old Larry Paris, of College Park, were charged with the offenses after robbing Quatros Caminos grocery store on West Broad Street, according to Det. Charles Israel. 14 arrested in safety checksPolice from Union City, Palmetto and Fairburn and agents from Tri-Cities Narcotics Task Force conducted license safety checks recently in locations in the three cities that resulted in 14 arrests for suspended licenses and marijuana possession and citations for other violations. As election nears, allegations start to flyMuch has been made in the past two years of the financial status of the proposed City of South Fulton, now set for a vote either up or down on Sept. 18. A letter last week by Fulton County Finance Director Patrick O’Connor at the request of Commissioner Bill Edwards provided a county assessment of some portions of the Report on the City of South Fulton, authored by Dr. Robert Eger of Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Some of O’Connor's points, if accepted by commissioners, might also have implications for county assets inside the voter-approved City of Chattahoochee Hill Country. Delay requested for Oakley developmentDelay requested. Delay approved. The Fulton County Board of Commissioners (BOC) Sept. 5 approved a request by Carmichael Development, LLC and another by builder D. R. Horton to delay requests on development proposals on Oakley Industrial Boulevard just west of Ga. Highway 138. The proposals were recently denied by the county’s Community Zoning Board (CZB). County turns down school sewer requestIf the Fayette County School System wants to tie onto Tyrone’s sewer system, it’s going to have to wait a while. Perkins hired as Tyrone police chiefTyrone wasted no time in hiring a police chief to fill the position of outgoing Chief David Mullis. The Tyrone Town Council thursday hired the veteran officer Capt. Brandon Perkins as the town’s new chief. His hire came with a 3-2 split from council members. Tyrone OKs auto repair shopTyrone Town Council Thursday agreed to one move that paved the way for a business to stay in the town and another move to distance itself from a Peachtree City man charged with stealing from an area booster club. Qualifiers finalized in South FultonIt has to be a record-breaking qualifying period for the cities of south Fulton. A total of 41 people qualified last week in the mayoral and council races for Chattahoochee Hill Country, Palmetto, Union City and Fairburn. |
