Close to 40 candidates running in South Fulton

The run up to the November election should prove interesting in the cities of south Fulton County. The list of candidates for mayor and council races in Chattahoochee Hill Country, Palmetto, Union City and Fairburn were impressive as of press time, with a total of 38 candidates qualifying.

Fairburn city council denies transfer station

Applause broke out spontaneously in the Fairburn City Council chambers Monday night as the city council did something that most of the 150 in attendance had not expected. The council voted unanimously to deny a request to establish a construction waste and household trash transfer station on the city’s south side. Concern over the proposal was evidenced by the packed house of residents and the nearly endless list of local, state and federal elected officials.

The long arm of the law had quite a reach Wednesday as Tyrone Police and other agencies chased four males in a stolen car into Fulton County following a residential burglary at Southhampton subdivision.

Fulton County leads the state in SAT scores

The 2007 SAT scores are in. And Fulton County leads the state in test scores.

Fulton County led the state with a combined 1,595 average score out of a possible 2,400, followed by the City of Decatur and Oconee County. Cherokee and Fayette counties tied for fourth place, averaging scores of 1,548.

Union City Extends Kreative Kidz program

What began as a controversy in June ended last week as an amiable parting of the ways. Union City council members Aug. 21 voted to extend the lease for Kreative Kidz youth enrichment program, giving the organization until Nov. 31 to relocate.

Sandy Creek gym could be ready for home opener

It’s been a long hot summer, but things may cool down at Sandy Creek High School’s gym by the middle of September.

The Tyrone Planning Commission met Thursday night and handled several matters.

The meeting began with the commission swearing in new commissioner Kathy Winton and was followed by the approval of a conceptual site plan for Lots 9 and 10, Phase VII of the Shamrock Industrial Park. The lots will share a driveway and previous concerns about lighting were addressed. The lighting on the site will now being shielded and directed downwards.

Mullis resigns as Tyrone police chief

Tyrone is losing a police chief. Long-time officer-turned-chief Police Chief David Mullis gave his resignation Aug. 27, citing a career as the reason. Mullis’ resignation is effective Sept. 21.

Rehwaldt announces for mayor

Announcing his bid for mayor, Don Rehwaldt said he will be a full-time mayor. Recently retired with 44 years of professional management experience, Rehwaldt said he is committed to improving Tyrone and enhancing property values.

More apartments on Oakley are denied

Fulton County zoning commissioners cast their lot with residents of Oakley Township subdivision Aug. 21 as the Community Zoning Board (CZB) denied a request to construct 465 apartments and other residences on Oakley Industrial Boulevard and another to establish 26,000 square feet of retail businesses adjacent to the subdivision.

The murder of two children followed by the suicide of the father who killed them struck Oakley Township subdivision Monday night. The motive for the killings is unknown.

Two arrests made in murder

Fairburn Police have arrested two men in connection with the Aug. 8 murder of 18 year-old Palmetto resident Brandon Horton, who was shot in the head during an altercation near Johnson Road on Fairburn’s south side.

Motorcycle crash kills one

Complaints by many area residents that South Fulton Parkway has become a local substitute for the Autobahn seemed to hold true early Monday morning when a Newnan man fleeing Georgia State Patrol (GSP) on a motorcycle was killed near Hunter Road. He was clocked earlier traveling 137 miles per hour.

City of South Fulton is financially viable

The new city of South Fulton is still viable. That was the conclusion of revised figures released last week by Georgia State University’s Prof. Robert Eger, noting that the new city will be in the black by approximately $900,000 for its first year of operation if voters approve the charter in the Sept. 18 referendum. The most outspoken opponent of the new city, Fulton County Commissioner Bill Edwards, is unconvinced that the figures will work. Standing diametrically opposed to that viewpoint is South Fulton Concerned Citizens who say Eger is on track.

New city looks to hire consulting firm

There is a lot to be done in a new city between elections in November and the start-up of municipal operations December 1. It is within that short time window that Chattahoochee Hills Organizing Committee is recommending that the new mayor and city council select Denver-based utility, public works and municipal operations company CH2M HILL OMI (Operations Management International) to help design, implement and operate the municipal services.

Tranfer station proposal draws residents’ ire

The Fairburn City Council meeting Aug. 13 had a full agenda with a variety of topics. But nearly all in the standing room-only crowd of 100 came for just one item, a proposed garbage transfer station on Bohannon Road. A decision on the proposal is expected at the Aug. 27 meeting.
