Watching the neighborhood

A growing number of residents across south Fulton and southwest metro Atlanta are addressing issues of safety and well-being in neighborhoods where their families live. One of those is the Magnolias subdivision in Fairburn.

Formed during the spring, the Magnolias Neighborhood Watch group met Aug. 25 at the Fairburn Library in conjunction with Magnolias Homeowner’s Association. A group of nearly 40 residents got updates on the names and functions of Neighborhood Watch block captains and heard information on home safety and security devices.

“We’re serious about crime,” said group President Brenda Cooper. “And we don’t play in this neighborhood.”

Block Captain Marcie Owens provided an overview on pricing of storm doors and other safety-related products. Residents also heard from local security provider Eugene Burns, who appropriately described the epidemic of residential burglaries that is occurring throughout the southwest metro area. He advised residents to consider enhancing home security and provided tips on how those measures might be taken, such as the installation of cameras and higher quality locks and deadbolts.

The meeting was also attended by Councilman Scott Vaughan and city council candidate Elizabeth Hurst.
