Tyrone Councilman Smola running for mayor

Tyrone Town Councilman Michael Smola announced Thursday that he is running to become the next mayor of Tyrone.

Smola made his announcement near the conclusion of a Town Council meeting.

"I've enjoyed my last five years as Post 1 councilman," Smola said. "I also recognize other positions are becoming available. The most important position in Tyrone in the next four years will be mayor of this town. I would like to announce my candidacy for that position tonight."

Current Tyrone Mayor Sheryl Lee is not seeking re-election. Thus far, Smola's only opposition is local businessman Chip Young.

Smola sat down for a brief interview following the meeting and discussed his qualifications for the mayoral position.

“I’m a great listener,” Smola said. “I take a balanced approach to everything I do. I’m big on planning. I’m fairly entrenched in the community.”

Smola feels he, along with his fellow town council members, has played a significant role in controlling development in Tyrone.

“I have seen Tyrone evolve from a country town to a metropolitan suburb,” Smola said. “Over time, we had a plan in place. We have tried to control development. I’m pretty confident that, looking at [the council’s] record, we’re doing a good job of managing growth.

“We haven’t experienced much traffic and crime here. I would like to continue that for four more years. We’re reaching build-out. I would like to finish the job and see what Tyrone looks like.”

Smola said one of his biggest accomplishments as a town councilman was playing a role in the development of Tyrone’s new library, set to open in December.

“I’m a strong proponent of the library,” Smola said. “I’m proud it will open before the end of the year. I feel had a lot to with that.”

Giving back to the community is the primary reason he has decided to run for mayor, Smola said.

“I love this town,” Smola said. “I have lived here for almost 15 years. Tyrone has been good to my family, and we want to be good for Tyrone.”

Smola's comments on why he is running for Mayor leads me to believe he is attending meetings some place besides Tyrone. "I'm a great listener"? you must be referring to your wife's incessant babble. You can't possibly be talking about anyone who has come before the council, or for that matter, anyone, ON the council. Didn't you cut Grace off, your fellow council person, the same night you announced for Mayor, while she was trying to pin Barry Amos down on the sewer deal? Not to mention the list of taxpayers that come before you to question the latest nightmare rezoning you've done on their property when they knew nothing about it.
"I take a balanced approach to everything I do. I'm big on planning" Wasn't it ..YOU..who was gonna build your new library on Shamrock park even though the ...TOWN DIDN'T OWN IT...? Then went in front of the Fayette county commissioners asking for the land and made an a## of yourself by yawning so much we though you either were going to sleep or OD ing? Way to go with planning.
"We have tried to control development." May I remind you the Wieland development up 74 you voted in with half the town at the meeting screaming ..NO..! Then because we HAD a law saying you had to have at least one build able acre per house, you zoned it for duplexes!???? so Wieland could stack em in there? Moving along and leaving a lot out, a month or so ago, YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE TO VOTE FOR +8+ HOUSES PER ACRE FOR DOWNTOWN? "I'm firmly entrenched in the community." Now that one took some head scratchen...did you mean in the hole you have dug for yourself, or do you mean hunkered down in the bunkers, waiting for us to catch on? "I'm giving back to the community"...well take it and go back up North

No more Smola Please. We can't continue wasting our time, effort, money and votes anymore for such a liar, uncaring candidates like him. Over the past years he's been in the government, all he cares about is that little power.

I wouldn't worry to much. Smola is a gerbil, and we all know what some "unique" adults use them for. That is where he belongs and that is where they will stay!
