County turns down school sewer request

If the Fayette County School System wants to tie onto Tyrone’s sewer system, it’s going to have to wait a while.

The school system was rebuffed by the County Commission Wednesday afternoon in its efforts to get out of the wastewater business on Jenkins Road and connect to Tyrone’s municipal system.

“It’s an aging facility, and we would be looking at some big capital expenses,’ said school facilities director Mike Satterfield.

Satterfield was seeking the county’s approval to run sewer lines in the county’s right of way to connect to Tyrone.

While the County Commission wanted to work with the school system, it appeared more legal items would have to be discussed before the issue is resolved.

“I just don’t see how this is different from the church that wanted to hookup to Peachtree City’s system and that we turned down,” said Commissioner Eric Maxwell.

Commissioner Herb Frady made a motion to allow the hookup, but Maxwell, along with Commission Chairman Jack Smith and Peter Pfeifer voted against the measure.

After the meeting, Smith said the county wanted to find a solution to the situation, and said an easement could be in order. An easement would allow the school system to tap into Tyrone’s system, but not allow any other users access to the system.
