The Old Campbell County Historical Society has chosen on of its own to serve as this year’s grand marshall for the homecoming parade. On Oct. 6 at 10 a.m., Nell Eversole O’Shields will ride down the main street of her birth and upbringing in Fairburn.

She is one of a small number of citizens who can say they were born in Campbell County. The county was created in 1828 principally out of Fayette County and went in with Fulton County in 1932.

She was one of three children born to George W. and Lucille Gullatt Eversole. Her maternal grandfather was, at the time, chief of police in Fairburn, Olin Gullatt.

After attending Campbell High School, she married Lamar O’Shields, Sr. in 1944. He died in 2004. There are two children, Lamar O’Shields, Jr., who lives in Douglasville just a block from his mother and Judy O’Shields Loveland, who lives in Florida. O’Shields has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

O’Shields and her late husband have always volunteered at the society, and she continues to take her turn at being on hand in its research room each Tuesday. She is glad to share her wealth of knowledge about old Campbell County and was instrumental in helping put together a fractional map of Fairburn that showed the residences of citizens in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

“We’re so proud to have Nell as our grand marshall this year,” said society president, Nancy Cornell. “She is always at the courthouse when needed, and in fact, as soon as the parade is over she will be found working at our society membership booth. We encourage you to come by and congratulate her.”

The Old Campbell County Historical Society meets each third Sunday afternoon, except June, October and December, at 3 p.m. in the old Campbell County Courthouse building. It is located at the corner of East Broad and Cole streets in Fairburn. You can reach its president at 770-548-9181. Its website is www.oldcampbellcountyhistoricalsociety.com
