On Wednesday, The State Transportation Board announced Gena Lester Abraham as DOT Commissioner effective December 1, 2007. Abraham will become DOT’s 14th Commissioner and first woman ever to hold the state’s top transportation post overseeing 5,800 employees statewide and over $2 billion annual agency budget.

Senoia cop charged with three counts of robbery

Shock waves went throughout the small town of Senoia this week after a Senoia police officer was arrested early Wednesday morning. Charles Patrick Morgan, 40, was charged with three counts of robbery and one count of violation of oath by a public officer. The arrest followed a joint investigation by the GBI, Coweta County Sheriff’s Department and Senoia Police Department.

Newest elementary school planned for northwest part of county

Coweta County’s newest elementary school could open for the 2009-2010 school year.

School spokesperson Dean jackson said the system is working on getting preliminary drawings to the state easily next year for a school at the intersection of Jim Starr Road and Tommy Lee Cook Road. The school system recently purchased a 30-acre tract, just behind the fire station at the busy intersection.

Schools remember long career of teacher Mary Cronbaugh

Long-time Newnan High School math teacher Mary Cronbaugh died Friday, September 7, 2007. She was 79.

Cronbaugh - who retired from the Coweta County School System in 2004 – was a beloved teacher not only to many Newnan High students, but to generations of students. She taught high school higher math for 53 years, including 34 years at Newnan High.

Cronbaugh was born in Flat River, Missouri, August 28, 1928. She graduated and attended high school in Bonne Terre, Missouri, and earned her Bachelor’s in mathematics in 1950 from Central Methodist College, in Fayette, Missouri.
