Is a college campus slated for Coweta County?

Speculation heated up this week when Atlanta Christain College announced it was leaving East Point after 70 years.

“Atlanta Christian College has just completed a two-year strategic planning process,” explained interim president Dean Collins, an organizational effectiveness consultant and 1979 Atlanta Christian College graduate in a press release this week. “During that time, members of the board of trustees, faculty, staff and administration dreamed of ways to grow the College and help us achieve our vision of becoming the college of choice for students seeking a Christian learning community that is academically challenging, spiritually vibrant and globally engaged.”

Atlanta Christian College communications director Sarah Huxford confirmed this week that officials have talked to Newnan leaders, but said the college has been flooded with requests after the announcement was made.

Based on goals and initiatives from the strategic planning process, the College anticipates significant growth over the next five to ten years. Enrollment, currently around 400 students, is expected to increase to approximately 1,200. At the request of the trustees, an extensive evaluation of the capacity of the current campus was conducted, with assistance from consultants with Performa Higher Education of Burlington, N.C. The consultants provided demographic information, capacity audits and other research.

“Our decision to look at a relocation scenario was driven by the intersection of our planned growth and the limited capacity of our current campus,” said Collins. He added, “We have had a wonderful relationship with the city of East Point for 70 years. And we plan to work with the city to leave a legacy here such as an educational facility committed to serving working adults who need a convenient location and format to achieve their dreams of a college education.”
