Shock waves went throughout the small town of Senoia this week after a Senoia police officer was arrested early Wednesday morning. Charles Patrick Morgan, 40, was charged with three counts of robbery and one count of violation of oath by a public officer. The arrest followed a joint investigation by the GBI, Coweta County Sheriff’s Department and Senoia Police Department.

GBI spokesperson said the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of the GBI regional office in Greenville on September 26, in an investigation regarding complaints of cash being taken from Hispanic individuals who were arrested on traffic offenses. The investigation revealed that Morgan was directly involved or assisted in the arrests.

“He was taking cash out of their wallets,” Bankhead said.

An undercover operation was conducted on October 9, in an attempt to substantiate the allegations, Bankhead said. As a result of the operation, warrants were issued for the arrest of Morgan. Morgan was arrested at the Senoia Police Department without incident and is being held at the Coweta County Jail.

Morgan was employed by the Senoia Police Department in August, 2007, according to GBI agent Rodney wall and was a police officer in Newnan before he came to Senoia.

First they hire an ex-Fayette cop that was fired after getting arrested for DUI. Now this clown. SPD ever heard of a background check?

Maybe they ought to just read the papers. Where is POST in all this?

There are bad apples in every barrel.
From the NTH:
Morgan, formerly a Newnan Police officer, resigned as a Newnan officer abruptly on Aug. 5 after three years on the force — and only one day after he was named Officer of the Year. The resignation came after a complainant informed the Newnan Police Department that Morgan had visited an online chat room Web site while on duty in his patrol car.

Morgan was reportedly using his personal laptop computer and web camera in the police vehicle around 5:30 a.m.

It further states the SPD Chief is on "Vacation."

I believe the AJC pointed out that the sting was set up by having a bad "Brake Light." I still don't understand how having 1 of 3 brake lights out justifies a traffic stop.

There are very few dishonest cops when one considers their total numbers. By that I mean as far as dishonesty and violating their oath.
However there are similar situations where people steal or take bribes that are not cops. Cops are no more immune to that kind of thing than is anyone else.
Although I think some general crime by the general population is caused by poverty and lack of money, however, it is usually for lesser sums of money and in stupid, ignorant ways. White collars steal big and deviously.
High ranking police officers have been indicted many times for violating their oath and the law. Even though they make a living wage, they do it for more money.
The cop, in general, in a small town, especially, seems to fall in between the two as far as wages are concerned. I don't know how much that has to do with cops who steal and do favors.
If we were to be more selective in the hiring of policemen, maybe we could reduce their criminal activities, and gain more intelligence, but expect to pay more for that.
Many cops know that they won't make enough money as a cop for many years, if at all, but they want the respect and pride that goes with the job anyway.
I suspect the real problem however is that after the initial training, which includes little about ethics and the disadvantages of low salaries, even less training and follow-up is done for them in the years thereafter. We have the same problems with corporate executives.

They are here to stay. They will become "legal", and then we can hire one for a police job opening in Senoia.

I guess Elvira Arellano thought the same thing. Where is she now - Mexico. As for becoming legal, that will only happen when the citizens of this sovereign nation allow it.

You got it right. Will take a little longer now for the illegals.

I'm glad they got him as the Hispanic people work very hard for their money!!! Harder than so many others!

This could happen to us if don't start to pay our cops more.

I'd like to think a little higher of the integrity of the police force than that.

We have good cops but they are leaving, because of pay and benefit issues. Small towns that don't pay much get stuck with this kind of cop.

You get what you pay for.

I doubt this thug will experience any actual jail time. But, he should. I'd personally like to see him exposed to the 'general population'.
