East Coweta High School was locked down Thursday morning after the school system heard a rumor about a student planning to bring a weapon to the campus.

School information officer Dean Jackson said the Coweta County Sheriff's Department was on the school property Thursday morning and the school locked down the classrooms.

The investigation is continuing, but Jackson said it appears to be rumors that started spreading like wildfire Wednesday night.

"Through text messages and chat, the rumors started spreading," Jackson said.

A number of parents kept their students home from school today, while others have dropped by the school to check students out.

"We understand parents' concerns, but nothing has been discovered to confirm this rumor or an actual threat to the students," Jackson said.

Jackson said the Sheriff’s Department worked well with the school system during the incident and is continuing its investigation into the issue.
