Tax rates on the rise

The Coweta County Board of Education will hold three public hearings over the next two weeks concerning its intention to leave the school system’s current ad valorem tax rate of 18.59 mills in place during 2007.

Ninth-grade campuses are nearly ready

Coweta’s foray into a new concept at its high school is nearly raedy for its close-up.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson said the ninth-grade campuses should be ready for the students when school starts August 6. The campuses were approved by the School Board in 2005 as a way of expanding the county’s three high schools and providing a transition for ninth-grade students into high school.

School system set to retire debt

After 20 years in debt, the Coweta County School system is getting ready to be debt-free.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson said the school sold its first set of bonds in 1987 to expand the rapidly-growing school system. In 1998 and 2002, the school system consolidate all its bonds into two issues with more favorable interest rates.

DOT takes South Fulton Parkway

The much anticipated move to place the South Fulton Parkway into the hands of Georgia Dept. of Transportation (DOT) came to fruition Wednesday. Being designated a state highway should preserve the parkway’s limited access as it becomes a major traffic corridor in the fast growing area of west metro Atlanta.

U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) has cleared the way for the vote on the city of South Fulton, likely to be held in September. The clearance came in a July 10 letter to Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker.
