Coweta’s foray into a new concept at its high school is nearly raedy for its close-up.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson said the ninth-grade campuses should be ready for the students when school starts August 6. The campuses were approved by the School Board in 2005 as a way of expanding the county’s three high schools and providing a transition for ninth-grade students into high school.

The buildings will have a classroom capacity for about 650 ninth-grade students and will each have its own cafeteria and media center.

Northgate High School’s ninth-grade campus is between the old and new gymnasium, north of the main campus building. East Coweta High School’s campus will be situated on the southern end of main campus, on undeveloped land facing the school’s main entrance. Newnan High School’s campus will be situated on a portion of the school’s upper-field parking lot on Armory Road, beside the Science Building.

The high school campuses will also have some parking additions and traffic changes to accommodate the buildings. There will be some parking lost at the Newnan High site, but new parking spaces will be added at the site at the LaGrange Street and Water Works Road intersection to provide a net gain of spaces.

The ninth-grade campuses “will be a total program aimed toward ninth-grade students” with a curriculum and climate designed specifically for new high school students, said board member Sue Brown when the architectural guidelines were approved.
