The Peachtree City Council approved allowing a church just outside the city limits to hook up to the city’s sewer system.

Heritage Christian Church must still seek a final approval from the Fayette County Commission before they can proceed.

The move would allow the church to free up 10 acres of septic field space to be developed into recreation fields. Senior Pastor Greg Marksberry said the hope is to allow the field to be used for flag football, soccer, softball and maybe even lacrosse.

Earlier in the meeting youth lacrosse organizers told council they need more space for their program because it is growing significantly.

The church will have to install all of the sewer infrastructure needed to send the effluent to the city’s system. The church is located on Bernhard Road just across Redwine Road from the terminus of Peachtree Parkway.

The sewer line proposed by the church will only be two inches in diameter, so no other developments could tie onto it to gain sewer access, said Larry Turner, general manager of the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority.

The project has been turned down before by the county commission, but that was before two new commissioners were elected in November, Marksberry noted.

“Their general concern, I think, was precedence ... and having a major impact on the community’s plan,” Marksberry said.

In the motion approving the sewer tie-in, council restricted it to non-residential use only.

“I have no problem getting as many people as we can on the sewer system,” said Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford.
