Expenditures questioned in Union City

The efforts to recall Union City Mayor Ralph Moore and Councilwoman Angelette Mealing saw another twist this week as questions surfaced over city expenditures that might have involved the Mealing-sponsored Union City Athletic Association (UCAA). The city maintains the expenditures were appropriate and lawful while Councilwoman Alisa King and recall organizer Retina Dawson-Young said they are a direct violation of city ordinances and the equivalent of theft.

Palmetto Police officers in the early morning hours July 21 gave chase and helped apprehend two men after the pair invaded a home in Chattahoochee Hill Country, assaulted one of the occupants and stole her vehicle. The woman was struck but not seriously injured in the incident.

Tyrone Town Council Thursday completed the second of three public hearings that will result in a 3.42 percent net tax increase for residents. While the council is holding the millage rate firm at 2.9 mills, the town did experience growth at approximately five percent, mainly through reassessments.

Team captains from Fayette County began laying the groundwork for the 2007 Southern Crescent Alzheimer’s Memory Walk to be held in Peachtree City October 6. Hosted by Blaine Morgan, managing partner of the Outback Restaurant in Peachtree City, the luncheon kicked off efforts to form teams that will solicit public donations to fight this dreaded disease. In 2006 a total of $200,165 was raised in the six-county south Atlanta area.

County’s last millage hearing is today
