Pfeifer questions recent county staffing decisions

Thu, 07/26/2007 - 9:27pm
By: John Thompson

Fayette County Commissioner Peter Pfeifer is concerned the county may be headed down the wrong path. Thursday night, the commissioner alluded to the recent dismissals of county attorney Bill McNally and county administrator Chris Venice. Just this week, George Patton and Chuck Watkins resigned from the Water Committee.
“That’s over 80 years of experience we’ve lost.”
Pfeifer also wondered why the position of county administrator was not being advertised.
“I think that’s something we need to focus on,” he said.

With the announcement of the resignation of George Patton and Chuck Watkins (former Fayette Board of Commissioners chairmen) from the Water Committee of Fayette County, this committee is simply being exposed as a graveyard for old politicians.

What is it about this committee that appeals so much to them or that requires their kind of competence? Why can't we find other citizens interested in public service who would serve on the committee?

New broom sweeps clean. We have a new broom on the Board of Commissioners. So far, so good. It's attitudes that have got to change. Often you need to change personnel to change the attitudes.

There is but one Fayette Political Graveyard...and Lawyer McNally is about to be buried.

Do you not realize these people have served our county for more than 20 years purely by donation of their time. They DO NOT get paid for doing what they do. If you have such a problem with someone giving their own time to better your county, then why don't you volunteer YOUR OWN DAMN TIME. But you won't, cause you're just going to sit back and critize because your are too high and mighty to give back to your county for FREE, unlike these men who gave their time for YEARS, without asking for anything in return.

You forgot one small part in that rant of yours: And they quit the job to serve a political purpose.

If the job was so important, why would they leave it to make a purely POLITICAL point? After all, if the job is so important, why not stay on to serve the citizens of this county? I, for one, am glad to see them go!

Maybe they can now serve on Greg Dunn's backyard pool board, they have earned that spot!

Why would anyone volunteer to serve on a committee nobody even knows exist?

Before volunteering for anything, one needs to be informed about the demands made on one’s time and the qualifications needed.

Old pols keep all that information to themselves, and then appoint each other to positions which help them keep their finger in the pie, i.e., keep current on the goings-on in government and upcoming opportunities for themselves and their friends. They’re always the first to know about opportunities, say, for an engineering consultant or contractor. Then they pass on the information.

Even when the public is informed about the availability of certain positions, the announcement is most often a legal formality with no meaning. In response to a legal ad in the Fayette County legal organ about a position to be filled by the grand jury, I once talked to the clerk of superior court, who told me the plan was to re-appoint the incumbents and that the announcement had been published simply because the law required it. The suggestion was that I should not waste my time and humiliate myself by volunteering.

The vast majority of political appointments are like that. No one looks for citizens who are interested and qualified. Cronyism reigns supreme, and that’s why I referred to the Water Committee as a graveyard for old political hacks. Until today, I had never heard of it, and I still don’t know what it does, how often it meets, and what qualifications its members should possess, but I’d be willing to bet they don’t call for anybody to be a veterinarian.

Hmmm... kind of like what the new commissioners are doing with Chris Venice's job....not advertising it, I mean.

Many on here would have you believe that Fayette County has been the most poorly managed entity in the State of Georgia. They want change, and they want it now. I'm not sure exactly who/what they want Fayette to emulate (they fail to address that), but rest assured, they want change. I personally think they are being short sighted.

Submitted by honestcitizen on Wed, 08/01/2007 - 10:57am.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. We've enjoyed the best quality of life of any county in this state, and yet they are still complaining. They keep referring to the "old corrupt guard." I didn't know we had an "old corrupt guard." If they are referring to people like George Patton or Bill McNally, well, these two people are responsible for bringing us all the positive things in this community we enjoy today. Seems like they are throwing the baby out with the bath water.

This County has been getting it right on a lot of things the last few decades. I can see a few votes on zoning issues coming up with this new Council that may tell the tale. I hope they continue to tow the line on the zoning issues.

Peter promised pretty public policy, pledging proper planning pertaining to palliative property payment and pork relief, pursuing parsimonius planning but instead he and Greg Dunn spanked the taxpayers with a double whammy assessment and mill rate increase in August of 2001. Can you say RINO ?

Git Real, how about get a life? You and your partners-in-crime(tonto, tortuga what's his name & others) spend all your days blogging on this website. Is this your whole life? Do you ever leave your house? Do you work for a living? You sound very bitter....I don't trust the opinion of anyone who spends each day spouting off a bunch of bile over the internet! You need help.

Post an avatar or be ignored. Every time we see a poster without an avatar we need to confront them about it. It's too late for HC because it's onto us but down the road it could get funny as all "git out".
