Town holding firm on millage rate

Tyrone Town Council Thursday completed the second of three public hearings that will result in a 3.42 percent net tax increase for residents. While the council is holding the millage rate firm at 2.9 mills, the town did experience growth at approximately five percent, mainly through reassessments.
The tax digest showed real and personal property in 2007 at $359,465,909 compared to $317,605,158 in 2006, with a gross digest of $381,500,257 compared to $336,904,274 in 2006. The value of motor vehicles increased to $21,612,650 compared to $18,998.860 in 2006. Net taxes levied in 2007 are $1,088,858 compared to $962,905 in 2006.
The town’s $6.1 million budget includes the addition of two police officers, a town engineer, an accountant, a maintenance worker, two library positions and a part-time code enforcement officer. The maintenance and code enforcement positions have already been filled.
The final public hearing will be conducted Aug. 2 at 6:45 p.m. at town hall.
