Highway grass cutting beginsThe grass growing season is upon us and Coweta County has begun its yearly time of cutting rights of way to maintain the safety of our roadways. The Coweta County Road Department maintains a regular route that is followed, insuring that all county roads are cut on a regular basis, said county Public Information Officer Patricia Palmer. Four cutting crews, running three bush hogs each, cover the route. The crews cut rights of way on county roads from May through the end of October or early November. Toney sentenced to 25 yearsPleas from family and friends was not sufficient to help Earnest Ray Toney avoid a lengthy prison sentence for a recent conviction on methamphetamine charges. Superior Court Judge Tommy Hankinson sentenced Toney Wednesday to 25 years for trafficking and five years for possession. The sentences will run concurrently. 2008 All-Citizen boys soccer team• Player of the year - Kyle Adams - Whitewater - Adams, who will play for Wake Forest University in the fall, was the Region 2-AAAA player of the year and the DiVarsity Student-Athlete of the Year. He scored five goals and recorded nine assists as a defender and made the first-team all-region team and the Class AAAA all-star team. 2008 All-Citizen girls soccer team• Player of the year - Erin Emerson - Whitewater - Although she dazzled us with her speed as a freshman, assisting Whitewater to a state soccer title, Emerson excelled in her sophomore season with 27 goals and three assists. She is a tenacious player and extremely fun to watch. 2008 All-Citizen baseball team• Player of the Year - Jake Tanis (SS) - McIntosh - Tanis had this award wrapped up halfway through the season. He swung a big bat and played solid defense for a Chiefs team that put up a fight in every game and made the state playoffs. Tanis had a .564 batting average, 44 RBI, nine home runs, 16 doubles, 15 stolen bases, a slugging percentage of 1.115, an on-base percentage of .641 and a fielding percentage of .975. Landmark Christian sweeps Brookstone, advances to Class A championship gameThe Landmark Christian War Eagles are now only two victories away from winning the Class A state championship after sweeping Brookstone 5-2 and 15-4 in a doubleheader Monday.
