Three of Fayette County’s five public high schools have received national recognition in Newsweek magazine’s listing of the top high schools in America. The honors went to Starr’s Mill, McIntosh and Sandy Creek.

School system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said the magazine ranks the nation’s top high schools each year by taking the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests by all students in a given school divided by the school’s number of graduating seniors. Data from 2006 was compiled to determine school rankings.

Out of nearly 1,400 schools recognized, Starr’s Mill was ranked at 1,004, with McIntosh at 1,133 and Sandy Creek at 1,372.

“We are extremely proud of our schools. We have some of the best students and teachers in the nation and it is their hard work that earned these schools this recognition,” said Berry-Dreisbach.

The 2008 recognition is not the first time the school have received national ranking. Starr’s Mill was ranked in 2003, 2005 and 2007. McIntosh was ranked in 2006 and 2007, while Sandy Creek received national ranking in 2003.
