(See video included) More than 200 jubilant residents paraded out of the Kedron Field House in Peachtree City Monday night after the Planning Commission unanimously denied a rezoning request that would have created one of the biggest shopping centers in Peachtree City. The development, slated for the intersection of Rockaway Road and Ga. Highway 74, would have featured a Lowe's, along with numerous other commercial sites that would have set nearly 300,000 sq.ft of commercial space at the doorstep of the Wilshire Estates subdivision. Attorney Rick Lindsey, who represented the developers, said the site was perfect for a commercial center and would feature several amenities to make it a perfect match for Peachtree City. But resident after resident walked to the podium and beseeched the Planning Commission to leave the zoning at General industrial. After Tyrone’s Town council voted down the latest proposal for downtown development, what’s next?

The Town Council could soon find out, according to town manager Barry Amos.

The vote is in. Eighty percent of Fulton County voters March 20 said yes to a renewal of the school system’s one-percent sales tax that carries a $893 million ceiling. The one-percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) renewal is slated to bring eight new schools to south Fulton.

A north Fayette man accused of trying to take a deputy’s weapon during a scuffle in August walked away from court a free man Wednesday.

Another in a continuing series of meetings on the formation of the new City of South Fulton was held Thursday at Welcome All Park. But this time, Dr. Robert Eger had updated figures indicating that the new city will be financially viable despite the annexations of large portions of the proposed city by existing south Fulton cities.

Things may be getting questionable for the future of South Fulton Municipal Regional Water & Sewer Authority. Bonds totaling $42 million were sold in 2003 with the idea of constructing a reservoir and the infrastructure necessary to serve the drinking water needs of Union City, Fairburn and Palmetto. Today the project is still not off the ground and is need of another $13 million. In the meantime, residents of the three cities will watch this summer as the municipalities begin paying on the principal and interest, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

Two Morrow residents are in custody and others are being sought by Fairburn Police in a Sunday night shooting that resulted in two injuries after approximately 100 shots were fired into a home at 915 Fellowship Road. Nine people were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Anybody up for a music festival? Fulton County Community Zoning Board believed the idea would fly, voting March 21 to approve a permit request by Rivertown Entertainment, LLC to hold an annual music festival on a 2,047-acre site in south Fulton.

The suspect, Jonathan Michael DeMartino, 26, of Palm Coast, Fla. had outstanding arrest warrants for armed robbery and false imprisonment, police said. The charges stemmed from a case in St. John's County where DeMartino is accused of robbing two victims for drugs, police said.
