Outgoing Fire Chief Stony Lohr was honored last week with a proclamation read in his honor at a meeting of the Peachtree City Council.

Knowing the modest Lohr might have tried to duck the meeting if he knew in advance, city staff kept the operation as covert as possible. Though such recognition is typically listed on the city’s agenda, Lohr’s recognition was not.

Lohr announced his impending retirement recently, citing a wish to spend more time with his grandchildren, among other more leisurely pursuits. Under Lohr’s direction the department has continued to progress and handles the city’s fire and emergency needs despite being significantly behind according to established national hiring standards for a city its size.

Lohr said he was proud of the men and women who make the department operate smoothly, and he feels it’s in better shape now compared to when he started in the position.

“I am going to miss those guys and gals who have served with me for so many years,” Lohr said. After a dramatic pause, he added, “I just wish I had some more.”

Moments later, council voted unanimously to hire three new firefighters as had been previously planned in an item that council had previously discussed.

Lohr also received a standing ovation from city staff, fire department staff and citizens who came to witness the occasion.

Lohr began as the city’s acting fire chief in 2000 and was promoted to the position full-time a year later after the passing of previoiuis chief Gerald Reed.
