The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department wants to get the word out to all motorists: Be prepared to detour around part of Sandy Creek Road this Monday, March 26.

CSX track crews will block the road between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to repair the rail crossing, according to Capt. Bryan Woodie of the Sheriff’s Department.

The barriers will go up between Ellison Road and Coastline Road, Woodie said. That’s near Sandy Creek’s intersection with Ga. Highway 74 in northwest Fayette. No through traffic will be permitted across the rail crossing.

A good detour would be Jenkins Road, which runs in front of Sandy Creek High School, Flat Rock Middle School and Birch Elementary School. Deputies warn that Jenkins Road is more heavily used by pedestrians than Sandy Creek Road, so motorists should use caution.

Deputies will patrol the area during the closure to ensure the area is safe, officials said.
