Crossroads students explore south FayetteFourth-grade students at Crossroads Christian School of Fayetteville reenacted the Lewis and Clark expedition by going on a trek of their own at Rollingbrook Farm in south Fayette County recently. Students portrayed various characters from the Corps of Discovery, and took breaks to record their progress and thoughts in journals. Flat Rock Middle School art students impress judgesArt students at Flat Rock Middle School received an unprecedented number of awards at the Georgia National Fair Youth Art Competition and Exhibition in Perry, Ga. recently. From 50 entries, students earned 49 place awards, as well as two “Best-In-Category” in the Middle School Division. Students also pocketed nearly $850 in monetary awards. Thirty middle schools across the state entered the event. Notables• Air Force Airman 1st Class Christopher A. Baldwin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. Baldwin is the son of Gary and Eileen Baldwin of Peachtree City, Ga. The airman graduated in 2000 from Starr’s Mill High School, Fayetteville, and received a bachelor's degree in 2004 from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, Ga. Real Big HelpReaching out to those in need Former pharmacy finds new life as thrift store One day a woman stopped by just to “look around” and see what was going on at the former Mundy’s Pharmacy in Tyrone. She asked the volunteers working there a few questions, seemed pleased by their answers and then shared a heartwarming story about “Doc” Mundy. It seems that late one night her baby was sick and needed medicine; she didn’t know what to do so she called Doc at home – his number was listed in the phone book – he told her he’d be there as soon as he could get out of bed and meet her at his pharmacy. Capt. Bell returns from IraqCaptain Lawson F. Bell, a 1993 graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, returned to Fort Wainwright, Alaska from Iraq on Nov. 30. Bell serves with the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team and spent 12 months in Mosul and four months in Baghdad. This has been the longest major unit deployment of the war. He is married to Jessica Ann (Thompson) Bell of Tyrone, a 1996 graduate of Sandy Creek High School and has a two year old son, James. His next assignment will be at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Bell is pictured with his wife and son. Spring Hill students earn new booksLinda Metoyer, Community Relations Manager for Barnes and Noble, recently visited Spring Hill Elementary School and presented a gift card worth $150 on SNN, the school's morning news program. Spring Hill students won this prize by reading lots of books this summer and completing the most forms for Barnes and Noble's summer reading program. Grisamore pops to successKyle Grisamore, a third grader at Braelinn Elementary School, is the top seller for Boy Scout Pack 409's annual fund raiser selling Trail's End popcorn. The fund raiser takes place each year in September and October and 70 percent of the money raised stays locally within the Flint River Council, which includes Coweta, Fayette, Upson, Pike, Spalding, Henry, Butts and Lamar counties plus Camp Thunder, while 40 percent of the funds raised stay within the pack. The taste of victoryHeather Snipes took first place at Alpha Internal Medicine's (AIM's) 2006 Festive Finger Foods Competition held recently. Dr. Dave Lee and his wife, Cheryl, judged this year's competion equally on taste, ease of preparation and festive presentation. Snipes' chicken and broccoli braid measured very well in all categories. AIM marketing director Mary Jane Holt took great pleasure in presenting Snipes with her first place prize basket of holiday baking goodies. MOMS Club sells discount cards for Children’s HealthcareThe MOMS Club® of Fayetteville is an international non-profit organization aimed at providing support for mothers who have chosen to stay home and raise their children. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Richard Heckman and brother of Jennifer Hoyt, both of Senoia, Ga. Heckman is a 2003 graduate of Fayette County High School, Fayetteville, Ga. Super SmartOne little girl striving to make a big difference It’s just after 4 p.m. on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, and Jordan Webster is tired from a long day at school. Most five year old children would be facing nap time after school, but Jordan is off to her standing appointment at Southland Health and Rehabilitation Center in Peachtree City to read to the elderly residents. Memory Walk donations exceed $200,000The final accounting numbers are in and the committee members of the 2006 Southern Crescent Alzheimer's Memory Walk are ecstatic. MHS student selected winner for Foreign Language Poster ContestTracy Estabaya of McIntosh High School has been been selected as first place award winner in the 2006-07 Foreign Language Poster Contest sponsored by the Georgia Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Students from all areas of the state submitted entries related to the theme, “Discover Languages—Discover the World!” Locals win essay contestEllen Super, of Peachtree City, and Andrew Nemchik, of Fayetteville, won the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest in October. Super and Nemchik are both juniors at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School in Fairburn, and are both graduates of St. John the Evangelist Catholic school in Hapeville. Couples sought for program designed to strengthen African-American marriagesHelping African-American couples learn how to keep their marriages strong, whether they’re newlyweds or have been married for many years, is the goal of a new program being offered in Fayette County and metropolitan Atlanta by the University of Georgia. Oak Grove Elementary students graduate from D.A.R.E.Approximately 70 fifth grade students from Oak Grove Elementary School in Peachtree City recently graduated from the D.A.R.E. Program. Taught by specially trained officers from the Peachtree City Police Department, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) details the dangers and consequences of drug usage. Class discussions also include peer pressure situations and how to handle them. Police Chief James Murray addressed the students, teachers and parents at each graduation ceremony. At the conclusion of the course all students submit a written essay on what the course meant to them. Jack & Jill teens donate to Fayette SamaritansTeens from the Fayette County Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc. have chosen the Fayette Samaritans as one of their community service projects. Each month the group will collect and donate non-perishables to the center to help replenish their pantry. PTC Optimist Club honors students at annual Youth Appreciation BanquetThe Peachtree City Optimist Club held its annual Youth Appreciation Banquet on Monday, Nov. 13 at Flat Creek Country Club. Each year students from the Fayette County area are selected by their school counselors or agency representatives to be honored for their outstanding contributions to their school and community. Students must meet the criteria set forth by the Optimist Club, which encourages, leadership skills, academics, volunteerism, participation in school organizations and community improvement projects. Local resident wins country music awardsTracy Lynn Lau, of Peachtree City, was recently named New Country Female Entertainer of the Year as well as Most Promising New Country Female Vocalist of the Year at the Georgia Country and Gospel Music Association (GCGMA) awards show on Nov. 11 in Dalton, Ga.
