Delorese Ambrose

Dr. Delorese Ambrose, an award-winning educator, a dynamic, international keynote speaker, consultant and author will speak at the Fayette County Library on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.

Ambrose will talk about her latest book, “Making Peace with Your Work-An Invitation to Find Meaning in the Madness,” which takes a fresh look at how we work and how our work, works. It is written with humor and poignancy.

The basic message in the book is powerful and provocative: “Our responsibility is to take charge of our work life and create the experience of work that we want,” states Ambrose. “We do this by asking probing questions, such as ‘What would you do differently if you had no fear of failing?’ or ‘Do you bring your inner self to work?’ When we leave our inner self behind, we lose our perspective, purpose, passion and creativity.”

Rich, timely concepts are explored, with warm, touching real-life stories. Today’s varied workplace includes employees from ages 20 to 90, who question our technology speed-culture and the "what’s wrong with slower” management question- not necessarily age related. She looks at work as the celebration of the human spirit…defining, enriching and sustaining us. Another concept is making peace with stuckness and our fears, if that is where we are. “Stay at the job, but change the way you look at it,” Ambrose notes. And, sometimes we need to stop and review before we move on.

The numerous ideas presented in this book are enhanced by the "Invitation” inserts of stories with questions to help one think through a dilemma. It is suggested that one note the answers in a personal journal. The working through of these challenges is both educational and fun. After all, even if something is not really your problem right now, who knows when it might be? A little preparation for the future, or even to help a friend, is worth it.

Often, in today’s workplace we have given the power to the employer. Ambrose espouses that it is time to take charge, and take good care of ourselves. Reminding us to take advantage of what is being offered at your present employment, such as educational benefits, conferences, seminars, etc. It is a fair trade, since our most vital years and the best waking hours of our days are engaged in work; work that punctuates and defines our lives. Keep your career fresh and viable. Become “Me, Incorporated.”

Other books by Ambrose include: “Leadership-The Journey Inward” and “Healing the Downsized Organization-What Every Employee Needs to Know About Today’s New Workplace.” On the subject of diversity, her video, “Best of Diversity Dilemmas,” is available through AGTS, (Audio Graphics Training System: www.agts-web.com.

Ambrose received her doctorate in Education from Columbia University, and served on the graduate management faculty of Carnegie Mellon University for eighteen years. She founded Ambrose Consulting & Training in 1987, to work with executives and organizations seeking change. She lectures internationally as a faculty member of the Institute of Management Studies, traveling to Brussels, Amsterdam, Scotland, England, Brazil and South Africa. She is a member of National Speakers Association, and is listed as a keynote speaker with Leading Authorities. Her Web site is www.ambroseconsulting.com.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library. A reception will follow including a book signing - with books available for purchase - and light refreshments.
