• Air Force Airman 1st Class Matthew L. Heckman has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Richard Heckman and brother of Jennifer Hoyt, both of Senoia, Ga. Heckman is a 2003 graduate of Fayette County High School, Fayetteville, Ga.

Christy O’Neill of Peachtree City recently participated in a White Coat ceremony for members of the Class of 2010 at Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy. O’Neill is the daughter of Elaine and Richard O’Neill. The students are beginning a four-year professional curriculum which leads to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. They completed two or more years of undergraduate coursework prior to entering pharmacy school. The ceremony included the presentation of a white coat to each student, and the taking of the pledge to the American Pharmaceutical Association’s code of professionalism. Each student chose a professional mentor to assist with the ceremony. O’Neill chose Sheila Goebel as her mentor. The Class of 2010 includes 123 men and women who were selected from more than 1,400 applicants. Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy enrolls a total of 480 students.

• Army Reserve Capt. Kathryn W. Carter is currently deployed overseas at a forward-operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Carter is a deputy personnel and administration staff officer with seven years of military service. She is the daughter of James G. and Elizabeth G. Wright of Peachtree City, Ga. Her husband, William, is the son of William E. and Kathleen M. Carter of Margate, Fla. The captain received a bachelor's degree in 1999 from Wheaton College, Ill.
