Two ladies in Massachusetts gave new meaning to the term birthday bash recently. A child’s birthday party at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant was cut short after a fight broke out between two mothers. Police said the mom of the nine-year-old birthday boy apparently became enraged because the other woman’s son was “hogging” an arcade game.

Area churches announce Holy Week & Easter activities

Holy Week for most Christians began last Sunday with Palm Sunday and will continue and culminate this weekend with Easter, the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Many observe other holy days during this special week and have announced their services and events occurring through Easter Sunday.

Young Life plans fund raiser

YoungLife of Fayette County, a not for profit organization serving the needs and support of children of Fayette, is having its annual fund raiser banquet Monday, March 31, at 7 p.m., at Heritage Christian Church in Fayetteville. A little over a week ago, all Starbucks stores everywhere closed for three hours, from 5:30 to 8:30 at night.

Why did they close down? In the words of CEO Howard Schultz, Starbucks shut down to open up and own up to its “first love.” Starbucks shut down to rediscover and rededicate the company to the “love, passion, and commitment” of the coffee experience.

Many churches in the Fayette area will offer Easter Festivals and Easter Egg hunts during the week preceding Easter Sunday.

The adult choir of Holy Trinity Catholic church, under the direction of Claire Stroud, will present ‘Tenebrae,” a service of darkness, Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m.

B’nai Israel’s Purim play and carnival set for this Sunday

Congregation B’nai Israel will have a Purim play and carnival March 16. There will be a children and adult play at 12:30 p.m. followed by a carnival with food and games and a silent auction. The play and admission to the carnival are free with a minimal cost for food and games.

Father Waymon Ahart of Fayetteville was recently appointed to serve as a canon in the Charismatic Episcopal Church.

“The rank of ‘canon’ is given in many dioceses to senior parish priests largely as an honorary title, although there are some ‘working canons’ who have significant areas of responsibilities,” said the Most Rev. David Epps who serves as bishop of Georgia and Tennessee and who made the appointment.

New Baptist church begins services in east Coweta Co.

A new church has formed in east Coweta County and will begin offering worship services this Sunday (Palm Sunday), March 16.

Lenten lunches continue at FFUMC
Fayetteville First United Methodist Church continues its Lenten Lunches on the last two Thursdays in Lent, March 13 and 20. Lunches are held at noon in the fellowship hall and cost $2. The March 13 lunch is sponsored by the Ethel Taylor Circle and the March 20 lunch is sponsored by the Bethany and Trinity Circles. FFUMC is in downtown Fayetteville.

As we approach the celebration of the greatest event that has ever taken place, the resurrection of Jesus, perhaps we need to examine our hearts to make sure that we have not allowed this focal point of the Christian faith to simply be noted as another holiday. The resurrection of Jesus is the message of the New Testament church. It is what we are to proclaim to the world until He comes. It was the message of the church of Acts that God confirmed with great signs and wonders. Mark 16:20 says, “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.” It is the same message that He still confirms today.

COS to host Seder service this Sunday

Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City will host a Seder service this Sunday, March 9, at 5 p.m.

Led by Casey Grist of Light of Messiah Ministries in Atlanta, the service will try to answer the question, “What do the Jewish Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper have in common?”

Episcopal Church of the Nativity’s Youth Group departed Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Feb. 16 and 17, to work on rebuilding the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Bay St. Louis, Miss. area. The group returned Friday, Feb. 22 after spending winter break working at Mission on the Bay, located on the grounds of Christ Episcopal Church, Bay St. Louis, Miss. Several adults including Nativity’s own priest, Mother Rita Henault, accompanied the group.

Proceeds were distributed to the quartet of Catholic parishes who sponsored the Las Vegas style evening last fall at Peachtree City’s Falcon Field. The event was a fund raiser for the St. Vincent de Paul and outreach groups in the parishes. Participants were St. Gabriel’s in Fayetteville, St. Matthew’s in Tyrone, Holy Trinity in Peachtree City and St. Mary Magdalene’s in Newnan. Total proceeds of $34,568 meant more than $8,000 per parish.

Lenten lunches continue at FFUMC
The Thursday Lenten lunches at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church continue with a luncheon Thursday, Feb. 28, sponsored by the Promise and Joy circles, and March 6, sponsored by the Mary Martha and Friendship circles. Lunch is served at noon in the fellowship hall for a cost of $2. Also, a brief devotional message is given. The church is in downtown Fayetteville across from the Fayette County Courthouse.

Many preachers dread rainy Sundays. Rain makes the flowers grow and church members disappear. Actually, even the threat of rain often affects Sunday attendance. For some, if the Weather Channel says “rain likely,” then that translates into “church going unlikely.”

New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville has two new youth pastors, one for each campus.

Brian Howell arrived from Chattanooga, Tenn. toward the end of 2007 to be the youth pastor for the North Campus.
