Explosive device at gas station disarmed

A small explosive device near a north Fayette gas station was safely disarmed shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The device was spotted at 7:30 a.m. near a dumpster outside the QuikTrip convenience store by an employee of the store, which is on Ga. Highway 85 north near the Fayette-Clayton county line, officials said.

DOT suspends road closings for holiday

The Georgia Department of Transportation will scale back its construction projects across the state – suspending related lane closures on all interstate and major state system highways – through Monday to ease Memorial Weekend traffic congestion. Fayetteville Police looking for Junior Police Academy recruits

During the week of July 23, 2007 the Fayetteville Police Department will have some new young recruits; the Department will be hosting its fourth annual Junior Police Academy. The Department will be taking applications June 1–30. Applications can be picked up at the Fayetteville Police Department located at 760 Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard. Applicants must be entering in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade and have a “C” average or better in school. Class is limited to 20 students.

Hudson Plaza rezoning denied

It was a “no go” for the request to rezone Hudson Plaza Shopping Center on N. Glynn Street from C-2 to C-3.

Fayetteville Planning & Zoning Commission Tuesday denied the request saying it did not conform to the city’s Future Land Use Plan. The denial centered on the Midas Muffler Shop, which is permitted under C-2 zoning but would require a special exception under C-3. The request will be heard by the city council in June.
