Fayette’s students used their power this spring to raise $41,000 to help children who have been victims of abuse or neglect.

Approximately 9,000 students participated in the 2007 Power Parade to benefit Fayette Youth Protection Homes. The parade is a walk-a-thon where students collect pledges and walk during their PE classes.

Prizes are awarded to students who raise the most money and to the school with the highest percentage of participation. The grand prize, a four-day, all expenses paid trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, was awarded to Ansley Betsil, a kindergartner at East Fayette Elementary. She raised $1,605, the most of any student in the county.

Kindergartner Laura Sellers of Peeples Elementary raised $1,500 and won the second place prize, a Nintendo Wii Game system. Spring Hill Elementary second grader Zoe Sagan raised $1,283 and took the third place prize, a $100 gift card to Toys R Us.

The two top schools were Brooks Elementary and Peeples Elementary. Brooks had the highest percentage of students turning in pledge donations, 80 percent, and was given a $500 gift certificate for PE equipment. Once again, Peeples was the top money raiser in the county with a total donation of $11,653.35.
