The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) has awarded the 2007 President’s Award to Fayette County School Superintendent John DeCotis.

The award is presented annually to four superintendents in the state who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, community involvement, professional accomplishment, and have shown exceptional knowledge of the field and made significant achievements in their school systems.

Dr. Stephanie Gordy, executive director of Griffin RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency), nominated DeCotis for the award. She states in the nomination letter, “His character, knowledge of his craft, willingness to allow employees to explore cutting edge concepts and community involvement makes him an exemplary leader who is deserving of this honor.”

“Dr. DeCotis is a pivotal leader within Fayette County who is inspired by his vision and his commitment to providing all children with the highest quality of public education. He has a genuine rapport with the students, teachers, administrators, parents, civic leaders and the general community, along with a talent for motivating others to step beyond their comfort zones and to achieve beyond their expectations,” says Gordy.

DeCotis has served as the school system’s superintendent for eight years.
