Five of Fayette’s elementary, middle and high school principals have done it again; they are among the more than 100 principals across Georgia designated as “high performance principals.”

Tracie Fleming (McIntosh High), Karen Bullock (Kedron Elementary), Sandra Watson (former principal of Peeples Elementary), Wenonah Bell (Braelinn Elementary) and Len Patton (Rising Starr Middle) has received the designation for the second consecutive year, meaning they have been recognized as “high performance” every year since the state began the Georgia High Performance Principals Grant Program in 2006.

According to the legislation passed by the Georgia General Assembly, “The sole criteria for designating and selecting individuals as high performance principals shall be data-based evidence of the effectiveness of a proposed high performance principal in improving a low performing school or in taking an average or excellent performing school to higher achievement within the last five years.”

Based on the criterion outlined in the law, the Georgia Department of Education used a three-stage process to identify the high performance principals. First, elementary, middle and high schools were identified from which potential principals could be selected, then the pool was narrowed to include only those who had been at the school during the 2005-2006 academic year and for the two immediately preceding school years. The third stage involved recommendation by the local education agency.

High performance principals are eligible to receive salary supplements if they agree to transfer to a school classified as a “Needs Improvement” school.
