Animal control costs jumpEverything goes up in price, including the cost of animal control. The Fairburn City Council April 24 voted to approve the recent Fulton County estimate that increases the annual animal control service to $52,904, or 10.7 percent, beginning in July. Council members also agreed to re-examine the issue if the new estimate exceeds 10.7 percent. Conceived as a major retail venue along Ga. Highway 74 and spanning 100 acres just south of I-85 between Oakley Industrial Boulevard and Milam Road, Fairburn City Administrator Jim Williams told council members Monday he expected the property to close by mid-August. City has big annexation plansIf Union City has its way the size of the city will more than double by the end of October. If approved by landowners and registered voters, proposed annexation would encompass large areas primarily to the north, south, northeast and northwest of existing city limits. Fairburn joins improvement districtFairburn council members April 10 voted unanimously to respond to a request to join the South Fulton Community Improvement District (CID). The request related to city owned tax parcels adjacent to existing CID boundaries. The 300-acre parcel, the former site of a proposed wastewater treatment plant and now designated as a city nature preserve, is situated in the unincorporated area southwest of city limits. The April 1 celebration in Fairburn marked the first day of operation of the new Fairburn Fire Department. A real sense of celebration was in the air, with a station full of guests, food and fun included. No one that day could have been happier than new Fire Chief Jody Weller and long time firefighter, fire safety supervisor and firefighter advocate Walt Brown.
