Study says new cities are feasible

The details are not as complicated as many once thought. Recently unveiled feasibility studies by Georgia State University’s Dr. Robert Eger showed that the proposed South Fulton cities of Campbell and Chattahoochee Hills can make it on their own.

Police still searching for bank robber

A shoot out Tuesday morning between an armed robber and an armored car guard in front of a bank on Ga. Highway 138 in Union City resulted in a hail of gunfire and the robber fleeing.

Fairburn electric rates on the rise

Fairburn council members Feb. 13 voted unanimously to adjust the city’s electric rate structure. Expected to take effect in April, residential users will see an increase in rates while commercial and industrial users will see a mix of adjustments depending on their consumption rates.

Proposed bill would create two new cities

True to his word, state Sen. Kasim Reed has introduced two bills in the Georgia General Assembly that may well change the future of South Fulton County.

Kasim Reed continued his whirlwind tour of locales around South Fulton County earlier this week, conducting town hall meetings designed to inform residents on the move to consider incorporating South Fulton into the cities of South Fulton and Chattahoochee Hills and to answer questions on the measure.

Council says yes to new land

Fairburn council members Feb. 13 voted to annex and zone property on both sides of I-85. A 101.6-acre tract along I-85 between Bohannon Road and City Lake was cited for possible use as an office park with accompanying retail while a 1.2-acre tract at Ga. Highway 74 and Oakley Industrial Boulevard is currently being developed for retail.

Fairburn makes change in trash service

Fairburn council members decided Feb. 13 to split the city’s sanitation service between two providers.

CLM Sanitation will provide residential service while Advanced Waste Disposal will serve commercial customers. Cost-saving measures to customers was cited as the reason for the decisions.

Palmetto council opposes anti-annexation bills

Palmetto council members Feb. 6 voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution joining Georgia Municipal Association’s opposition to two House bills related to municipal annexation. Resolution 06-01 opposes any legislation that restricts the rights of property owners seeking to annex into a city.

CHC group adds to board

Chattahoochee Hill Country Conservancy has expanded its board to keep pace with the area’s growth. The conservancy announced Jan. 20 the addition of four new board members.

Elder faces another stalking charge

Eighteen-year-old Fairburn resident Larry Marco Elder was arrested at Fairburn City Court Feb. 8 for stalking a woman in the Meadow Glen area during a two-week period in December and January.

Palmetto burglary suspect arrested in Atlanta

An Atlanta man arrested Feb. 4 on multiple charges after soliciting sex from an undercover Atlanta officer is a suspect two Jan. 31 business burglaries in Palmetto.

Medicare Matters registration

South Fulton Senior Services, Inc., in conjunction with the “My Medicare Matters” mobile unit, will host a Medicare Part D registration session for older Americans Thursday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Senior Center.

A Union City woman was one of 22 defendants charged Jan. 26 in a mortgage fraud case involving more than 40 homes and 230 condominiums in the metro Atlanta area.

Task force getting results in drug battles

Their job is to take street and mid-level drug dealers off the streets of Fairburn, Palmetto, College Park, Hapeville and East Point. They are Tri-Cities Narcotics Task Force and their efforts are paying off in the millions.

Area students reap financial literacy rewards

Over 20 high school students from Creekside, East Coweta, McIntosh, Tri-Cities, Sandy Creek and Clarkston high schools graduated with enthusiasm and life-changing knowledge from the six month “Out Of the Box” (OOTB) youth financial literacy program developed and managed by the South Fulton Business and Empowerment Center in Union City.

The City of Fairburn has been developing a Comprehensive Plan to foster sustainable development as the city grows. The plan addresses items such as population growth, development patterns, economic development, natural and historic resource preservation, and other issues as they relate to Fairburn.

Boothby leaves as Chamber chair

South Fulton Chamber of Commerce President John Boothby tendered his resignation effective Jan. 20 and will be assuming the position of President of Newton County Chamber of Commerce beginning in March. Boothby served at the South Fulton Chamber since 2001.

Moore wants more economic development

Mayor Ralph Moore has plans for Union City. In his Jan. 17 State of the City address Moore called for numerous local enhancements that included free, citywide Internet, a Tax Allocation District to attract fine dining restaurants and other businesses, stronger litter laws and a Senior Citizen Homestead tax exemption.
